CHAPTER 55
“Do you know her?”
Tony gave Denny a short nod. “What’s the story?”
A closed look came over the reporter’s face. “You tell me. You’re the one who knew her.”
“Friend of a friend. Didn’t really know much past her name.”
He made a note, but still looked skeptical. “She was in the papers a few weeks back. A scandal, if I remember right. I didn’t cover the story, but remember the talk at the paper. Said she was a real looker.”
“Yeah, she was that. Still is, as far as I know.”
“Think this has something to do with the scandal?”
Tony lifted his eyebrows in a quick up-down motion. “Maybe, but probably not. Why would it? That happened over a month ago if I remember correctly.”
“Still. Seems like an awful coincidence, and I don’t believe in them. Do you?”
Tony hesitated. Did he? Could this possibly be tied to Michael in some way? Not that he believed Michael was involved in her disappearance, but was the scam she tried to pull somehow related to this? Maybe this was another scam—another attempt to frame Michael. He needed to tell him about this. “No, I don’t believe in coincidence, but what does that prove. Nothing. For all we know, this entire event was staged. Look, I gotta go, man. Let me know if you find out anything.”
“Will do. Return the favor, would ya?”
“Yeah, sure I will.” He shook the reporter’s hand and then, left. Twenty minutes later he was back in his apartment dialing Michael. Took him several times to get through. Finally, Michael’s voice came back to him over the cell phone.
“Hello.”
“How’s it going? Is Niki feeling any better?”
“Don’t know. She’s missing. Police are searching the island now.”
“No way. Well, she’s not the only one.”
“What do you mean?”
“Cassandra’s also missing.”
“What?”
“Yeah, when I got to her place, it was covered up in police. I heard there was blood found at the scene.”
“My God! What’s going on, here?”
