CHAPTER 59
Niki pushed hard on the accelerator driving the streak of blue steel long past the legal limit. The sky was dark, and the wooded median blocked light from on-coming traffic, giving her a sense of solitude. The tight muscles in her shoulders began to relax for the first time in hours, and she felt at peace.
“So what do you think he’s doing right now?”
Niki had been trying to steer her mind away from that topic, but knew she would have to face it eventually. Why had he been so nice to her—so understanding? That wasn’t supposed to have happened. Wasn’t he a heartless rake who used women for his own pleasure and then threw them away?
“I’m trying not to think about it.”
“Don’t tell me you fell for him?”
Niki pushed the gas pedal down another notch, jerking the car forward with the sudden increase in power. “Don’t be absurd. I’m not a silly schoolgirl to be flattered by a few well-chosen words. There’s too much at stake, and I know him too well.”
“Do you? Paper and theoretical knowledge are different than being naked with a man in his bed. Don’t tell me you didn’t feel anything when he brushed the hair back from your neck and pressed his lips against your bare skin.”
“I didn’t become numb to sex, if that’s what you mean. I tolerated his pawing.”
“Yeah, I’ll just bet you did.”
Niki’s hands tightened around the steering wheel. “Look, I did what I had to do, but I didn’t enjoy it, and I’m not proud of it. Okay?”
“Fine with me. I’m not the one lying to myself.”
“Do you mind if we change the subject?”
“Look we have a long road ahead of us. I just need to make sure you’re prepared to go the distance.”
Niki changed lanes to pass a slow-moving eighteen-wheeler. “You think Michael’s so captivated me with his charm that I’ll go running back to him and confess everything.”
“Yeah, something like that.”
“Well, you’re wrong, Cassandra. I’m in this for the duration, no matter what happens. Got it?”
“I hear you talking, but you’ll have to do more than talk to convince me. Are you ready for the next phase?”
“Don’t we need to wait until everything’s in place?”
“And give you a chance to back out. No chance. We’re as ready as we need to be.”
