CHAPTER 63
The black jag flew down the highway like it had wings, hugging the circle of the mountain more from force of will than any law of physics. The driver was beyond the trivialities of this world, sailing through the star-studded heaven of cool breeze and twinkling lights, while creating his own reality. The passenger, however, had no such delusions.
“Michael, I think the accelerator’s stuck. We’re not in a huge hurry, you know.”
The driver didn’t react, turning the wheel in fluid motion with the curve of the low north side of the mountain. Tony didn’t speak again until they reached the town of Bright. They had spent the weekend in Portugal before flying back to the States. The decision to drive into the city was Michael’s. He was sure they could reach his condo before morning, beneath the radar of the local police. They had, and had spent most of the next day receiving reports from private investigators.
Tracking Niki had been easier than Michael would have ever thought. Seems that in this age of modern technology and satellite tracking, no one can remain a mystery for too long unless they’re willing to break all ties. At first, he thought she’d been kidnapped. Then, Cassandra went missing. He didn’t make the connection—not at first. It was actually Tony who made him see the validity of the scenario.
**************
Nicadea followed Mikelle to the waiting mounts. He was leaning heavily toward the guard on his left and on his friend, Anthony. She remembered the morning she had returned from the stream for his bath and discovered the Roman soldiers surrounding the General. That was two days ago. By this evening they would be back at the stone fort—the General’s home in her country.
He hadn’t spoken to her directly since the soldiers’s arrival, but several times, she’d seen him look questioningly in her direction. She wondered what would happen when they reached the fort. She had saved his life, but she had also run away—a crime punishable by death. From the pitying looks of the other men, especially Anthony, she knew her punishment would not be light.
