Chapter 65
Nicadea shrank back with a growing sense of unease. Helping Mikelle was the last thing she wanted. Even being alone with him was disquieting. She would have preferred to work until her hands and feet were raw than suffer his company. Why had he chosen her, especially with so many willing females around like that Cassea? Nicadea had not missed the malevolent looks the woman shot in her direction.
“What do they call you, girl?”
She considered refusing to answer, but saw no advantage in being stubborn. “Nicadea.”
The last orange rays of the setting sun fell boldly against the far walls of the stronghold, giving the uppermost rooms a warm glow.
“What do you want of me,” she blurted out, giving voice to her unspoken fears. Once the words were out, she wished she could call them back. He had dropped his grip on her arms, but hadn’t moved back. Being in such close proximity to the man was unnerving. Up until now, her violent dislike of the man had kept her safe from his classic good looks, but her feelings had softened during the days he had spent under her care.
He was quiet, causing her to look up. She stared into the greenest pair of eyes she had ever seen. They were searching, reading her thoughts. She knew if she kept looking, she would be lost. In an act of self-preservation, she fixated on his lips, and something deep inside her stirred into life. Full and sensuous, they moved slowly toward her as she waited anxiously, helpless to turn away.
As his face neared and blurred she squeezed her eyes tightly shut, letting his mouth take control of her senses. The sensation of his lips was pleasing causing the longings inside her to increase. Without realizing it, she began to kiss him back, surrendering completely to the wonderful new feelings. Never before had she felt so warm and protected.
Without warning he pulled back, ending the kiss. His breath was ragged—his eyes a deep jade. Suddenly, she felt cold and abandoned. Had she done something wrong? Did he find her repulsive? She hung her head down in shame. When she mustered the courage to look up, he was across the room with his back to her. Apparently forgotten, she slipped out of the room and down the back stairs.
