CHAPTER 6?
Niki took a deep breath to keep the quiver out of her voice.
“So, you’re planning for us to stay here until Michael is convicted of our murders?”
Cassandra stood up and stretched. “Charged, convicted, and executed. Man, I love the sound of that.”
Niki tried to laugh, but the sound was less than convincing. “That could take years. We can’t stay hidden away in this house all that time.”
Cassandra gave her a level look. “You’re right. We can’t. Besides, there’s no way I would miss Michael’s trial. I want to watch him squirm.”
Niki’s stomach turned at the cold tone of the woman’s last words, leaving Niki with little as to her sincerity. She really wanted to see Michael suffer. “I don’t know a lot about the law, but I feel sure the case will be thrown out once the victims show up in court.”
Cassandra’s laugh, unlike Niki’s was quite genuine. She motioned toward the door. “I’m starved. We can discuss this in the kitchen.
Niki followed her down the stairs and watched as she made a light salad. The woman seemed relaxed and carefree. Deceit must become her. Personally, Niki didn’t feel like she could ever eat again. The thought of eating as they coolly framed Michael for double murder didn’t stimulate her appetite. She waited until Cassandra had almost finished her meal before pressing her further.
“So what’s the plan? How are we going to get inside the courtroom to watch the trial?”
“Plastic surgery. We’re going to change our looks. No one will be able to recognize us.”
Niki couldn’t have been more shocked. “But I don’t want to change the way I look. I like looking like this.”
Cassandra shrugged off her protests. “You’ll get used to it. It’s the only way the plan will work. We will go to prison if we get caught, you know. Is that what you want?”
Niki felt her mouth fall open as her mind flew through a multitude of possibilities she hadn’t considered before. Prison had never been a part of her plans. Of course, faking murder hadn’t either. “No, of course not. I just didn’t know you were planning to take it this far.”
Cassandra narrowed her eyes and Niki could feel them boring into her. “You aren’t going to disappoint me, are you, Niki? I hate it when people let me down.”
“No, of course not. We’re in this together, but I do have one question. What about the money? If I’m dead, I can’t inherit the money.”
Cassandra nodded her approval at the question. “Now, you’re thinking. After he’s been executed, you’ll come forward and claim the money.”
“Won’t I still be in danger of going to prison? No. You’ll tell them that he killed me and tried to kill you. You changed your appearance to be safe and left the country. You came back when you heard about his death. I know it sounds weak now, but it won’t be when I work out all the details. I got us this far, didn’t I?”
“Yes,” Niki agreed, wondering how she was going to manage to escape.
“Good. I’m glad we’re in agreement. Our appointment is set for the end of the week. Get ready for a whole new life.”
