CHAPTER 72 (Part 2)
The ancient stones, rumored to have been sitting in the field for hundreds of years, brought Mikelle a sense of tranquility. Often at sunset, he would walk the path skating their outer perimeter, and think. This evening Anthony joined him to discuss the matter uppermost in both their minds.
Mikelle’s voice rang out strong through the quiet meadow. “Publish the bans.”
“No, Mikelle. I beg you to reconsider. It is one thing to bed the wench, but quite another to take her for your wife.”
“I haven’t bedded her.”
“Exactly. Therein lies the problem. Bedding her will get her out of your head for the last time. I mean, how many times have you told me that it makes no difference which one you take to bed.”
“Yes, my friend. I know I’ve told you that many times, but I’m telling you, she’s different.” As he said the words, he pictured Nicadea with her fair skin and pale blonde hair streaming down her back. Her eyes had flashed blue sapphire when he’d kissed her. Bringing her to heel would be a real pleasure.
“Is there nothing I can say to bring you to your senses?”
“No, my mind is made up.”
“And hers?”
He thought back to her fiery display of temper. She had a fine spirit, that one. “She is a woman. They are silly weak-willed creatures, who need a firm hand to guide them. She’d bend to my will.”
Anthony shook his head, his mind filled with doubt. He remembered her flight in the hills, and knew he might have underestimated this strong woman. “Are you not afraid she will kill you in your sleep?”
Mikelle laughed heartily. “I will not be sleeping, my friend and neither will she.”
Nicadea crouched in the back of the storehouse, scarcely daring to breathe. So far, no one had come looking for her, or even missed her, but she knew her luck could not last indefinitely. If she could just stay out of sight until nightfall, she knew she could make it away from the stronghold. Once free, she would search out friends to come to her aid. She might even build an army like Boadicea.
