CHAPTER 75
Niki hung up the phone after the second ring. The sky, dark with clouds, was beginning to flash with unseasonable lightening. She pulled her coat more closely around her shoulders and hurried toward the car. Cassandra had been asleep when she’d left, but might wake up at any time and discover she’d gone. What a wasted trip!
When she’d first decided to warn Michael, the idea had seemed to be sound. She’d give him a brief message, warning him about Cassandra, and break the connection before he had time to run a trace. The plan, however, had been aborted after she’d chickened out at the last minute. I mean, what did she know about tracking a signal? She was dealing with a man who could afford the best of the best. His technology might be able to pinpoint her location before she’d even hung up the phone.
Her trip back to the cabin was hurried. No sense getting caught for nothing. Somehow, she’d just have to convince Cassandra that framing Michael for murder was going too far. The woman would surely see reason once faced with the facts. She couldn’t hope to get away with such an outrageous ploy. Niki slipped out of the car and into the house, taking care to stay as quiet as possible, totally unaware of the dark sedan sitting three blocks down the road.
“What now?”
“Let’s just wait. I want to watch for a while before we make our move.”
“Know what you’re going to do?”
Michael tore his eyes from the house, and slid them across the seat to rest on his old friend. “Oh, yeah. I know. You just take care of Cassandra. Think you can do that?”
Anthony grinned. “She’ll never know what hit her.”
The men turned their attention back to the house, now bright with electric light. A shadow crossed behind the bay window and then retraced its path. Someone inside was pacing. Michael lifted the binoculars and focused in. The walker paused and pushed back the curtain. Both men flinched involuntarily, as if she could see into the darkness.
“Niki seems restless tonight. Think she senses you closing in?”
“No, I don’t imagine she has a clue.
“How long are you planning to wait?”
“I want to give them a chance to get settled. Let’s go in about 12:00.”
Anthony lowered his binoculars to his chest. “That’s a long wait. Mind if I take a quick snooze?”
“No, go ahead while I keep watch. Doubt if they’ll go out again. I’ll wake you when it’s time.”
The time crept by. Michael watched the shadows through the window until his eyes refused to focus. He slept. When he woke up, the time was after two and the house was dark. He shook his snoring friend, who cursed him vigorously, and performed a final equipment check.
“Are you up for this?”
Anthony rubbed his eyes. “I’m well rested and ready for action.”
“Good. I’ll see you on the flip side. Just be careful. She’s a hellion.”
“Don’t worry about me. You have your own hellcat to deal with, buddy.”
Fifteen minutes later, they were inside.
