'I was born the daughter of Streamfleck and Waterlily Swiftstream. My father was the leader of Holt Kimpa, my mother always warned him that our home was too near to where the river joined the ocean, but father remained sure in him and his warriors powers of fighting. Life in Holt Kimpa was good and we had a steadily rising population, I befriended Akani, the daughter of the second in command to my father, a brave otter named Powler, he was immensely powerful and he and my father were like brothers. One day when I was swimming in the river and playing with Akani when a horn sounded in the settlement, Akani and I were called in from the river, there was to be a Holt meeting. When we arrived, I knew something was wrong, my father looking very grave. He spoke of a horde of searats on a galleon, sailing this way, no farther than a days sailing from when the river opened to the sea. All the warriors were assembled, and the young and old were taken to a cave that could only be reached by swimming under the water, and up into it. I was sent there with my grandmother and I sat with her and Akani. Through an opening we heard blood-chilling cries of "AKLADOR!" though in reply, "HOLT KIMPA!" The air was filled with far-off cries and the shoutings and screaming of the battling creatures above ground. Unlike Akani, who hid her face in her grandmother's lap, I stood firm and tried to get up through the opening to fight. One otter pulled me back, "Stay here Oceansong," he said, "Where it is safe." I was filled with rage, but my grandmother kept a firm hold on me and would not let me go.
The screamings and shouts eventually quietened down, one poked him head through the hole, he said the coast looked clear. We swam out and crept back to the settlement, what I saw made me scream in terror. All around, lay the corpses of searats and otters. I suddenly ran to a familiar one and looked at in in horror, Jepson! My brother. I wept over his body, and then heard another scream, I looked up, and saw an otterbabe had been grabbed by a searat! Panic ensued on us and the searats ran in to grab the survivors. I ran and ducked behind a bush, I saw Akani being grabbed by a searat, I took a dagger from a fallen rat and stabbed him. I grabbed Akani and jumped into a thick bush with her, holding my paw over her mouth. The searats stalked off, dragging the rest of our group with them. Tears of rage sprung from my eyes as I left the bush with Akani. Akani wailed and collapsed on the floor, but she was to tired to do anything.
For the next few months, the cold winter engulfed us, but we had no shelter and Akani became sick, for she didn't have my warrior's heart and had never hurt a fly. She perished, like a lily in the winter. I wept long and bitterly over her death, for I was alone in the world. But then, I was filled with a renewed sense of survival, searching endlessly for some place to call home. Finally, I found the Cavern, my home.

You have had a hard life, Oceansong, harder than many here at the Cavern. I am very glad you finally found a home among friends. (NT)Redhound16:47:04 01/02/02 Wed
