A while back, I was helping to clean out closets at my parents' house and came across a folder of my records from the pediatrician from the 1960's. I had the same pediatrician from birth to the age of 10. Around the age of 3, I noticed in the records that the doctor that the "parents are concerned about constipation." He went on to write that parents were instructed "to use a Dulcolax suppository if no BM in 3 days," and " a soapsuds enema (he wrote SSE) of 1 pint if results of suppository were not satisfactory." Subsequent visits over the next couple of years mentioned the constipation and by age 6 he prescribed "an SSE of 1 quart when needed."
I do remember the suppositories a few times and being asked if "I felt anything yet?" On a few occasions, I have memories of lying on the bathroom floor on a towel on my stomach receiving an enema so apparently, the suppositories didn't always work. I remember turning my head watching the enema bag deflate and a couple times having to lie back down on the floor for "more water."
I don't remember the enemas being uncomfortable, other than a burning sensation in my bottom from the soap. I remember being asked if I could feel the water going in as well. I was wondering if others had similar experiences as parents back then seemed to have an obsession with regularity. Thanks.
