Thowra's Secret Valley
The magpies call out their last songs as the glowing sphere in the sky begins to lower over the horizon. A lone eagle floats over the tinted clouds before disapearing from sight. At one glance he is there, then he is gone: disolving into the thick brush of gumtrees below. Only the lonesome clouds are left, some gold and orange, others pink and purple. But all swirled to make one huge, bright scene. You stand on a small clearing which overlooks a field and forests below. Slowly they are swallowed away from your sight by the setting night. A rich blanket of stars covers the sky, with the moon replacing the tiring sun, gracing all with it's silver rays. A possum stirs in the tree next to you, creeping out of it's hole to blink at the beautiful landscape. Then it's gone, darted into the cover of the next gumtree. The cold sets in as the night continues, crisp and exciting as it tells of all the freedom within the lands. Suddenly a rustle to your right cause you to look around. A flash of gold.. silver.. and a huge form dances below the moonlight. The cold wind telling him it's secrets of freedom and the rustle of gumtrees whispering it's tales.. only to him. Hooves flash as they weave a prance to you.. arched neck held high with a air of proudness. Silver tinted curtain of light floating out behind him, shining even brighter under the moon. Thowra halts within an inch of you, his steady breathing almost mixing with yours.. but not quite, for he is always the shadow of a ghost.. never quite there. But his voice is almost as exciting as the wind when it comes, soft and gentle. "You have been here a while.. seen the beauty Drumming Hooves can offer.. and now it is time to visit my home.. my lands. For although I roam these parts as the wind.. as the sun.. I can never own which cannot be tamed. So I have found a place which can solely be mine.. just as one can own Limestone Creek.. or Mt. Townsend.. I own the Secret Valley. Not many find they're way here.. simply because it's entrance is rather.. lost. You must travel in sorts of different paths.. to finally come to the valley. But now, come.. the paths will be shown to you. For if I have your trust that you shall keep my secret.. one which I hold only to once in a while gallop along the plains with no other horses about.. then you may enter. This place is meant only for perhaps a few other horses.. if I choose to start a herd. Once in a while I may ask a few mares to join me at my valley.. for sometimes the heart may not be tamed when it beats ever so fastly at the sight of one. That is a different matter, however. If I have your trust that you will not reveal this place.. then come, be a visitor in the Secret Valley.." With that he turns, melting back into the moonlight bathed gumtrees. You follow him closely, just the shadow of a horse once in a while coming to flicker upon a patch of tinted snowgrass. After a short walk both of you come to a softly tinkling creek. It winds over a few large rocks.. seeming to carry on and on... a never ending journey. Thowra's shadow dissolves into a real horse. He gazes around for while, making sure no one is about. Then, he steps into the ice cold, running water. Walks forward a few steps to the other bank, where what appears to be a large canopy of trees standing tall and proud. Pausing for one last moment to make sure no one else is about, he darts underneath the trees. You follow, but are surprised deeply when it turns out a large cave is hidden deep within the thick branchs. Thowra ducks under, his hoofs echoing strangly off the rock floor. Only for a moment are you two in the small enclosure before stepping back out. Right before you a large ridge stretches out, overlooking a large plain. You only get a glimpse of it before you follow the Silver Brumby into a path of wattle trees. Many get tangled in Thowra's coat and mane as you two proceed through them. Finally they lead to a large path. It looks old, overgrown with ferns and small bushs. Thowra nods approvingly. No hoofmarks to indicate anyone found it. But even so, he turns off sharply and pushs through some large bushs. There, another, smaller and considerably more worn out path leads off in the same direction. To both sides the forest is thick, although not of wattles anymore. Thowra starts down the path at a fast canter, seeming impationent to get to his valley. The path twists and circles for about ten minutes, before leading out to a large cliff. Thowra stops, but the excitment is all around him. So close to his home now.. just a little more to go! He gives the cliff one glance before taking off into the forest nearby.. one which is sloping downwounds with the cliff's side. Both of you travel this way for half an hour.. until the rows of gumtrees finally open up to level ground. And above you, is the spot where you were 30 minutes ago. Thowra hardly pauses. Instead he moves off down between the two great rocky sides, keeping to the grass patches that appear here and there. This turn leads both of you to a long, sloping path. Thowra stops, lappets pricked. Before you, the first rays of light begin to appear above the horizon. All night you have been travelling.. going onward and onward after the Silver Brumby. And now this is the spot. Just a short journey down the winding path of the mountain and the Secret Valley is going to be before you.. Thowra starts down the path.
