Rider University 63, Canisius College 46

BUFFALO, NY--The Broncs held Canisius to just nine points in the first half, and held on for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory in Buffalo Tuesday night. The victory snapped Rider's four-game losing streak.

Rider (3-5, 1-1 MAAC) held Canisius (1-4, 0-2 MAAC) to just two points over the first 14 minutes of the game, building a 19-2 lead, and led 26-9 at the half, eight points by senior Mario Porter (Irvington/Irvington), who finished with 18 points. Canisius shot just seven percent (2 of 26) in the first half.

"Bizarre would be an understatement to describe that first half, but any time you win a conference game on the road, you take it and move on," said Rider head coach Don Harnum.

Trailing 43-23 with 12:12 left, Canisius went on a 13-4 run, five points by Toby Foster, to cut the lead to 11, 47-36, but that was close as the Golden Griffins could get. Foster finished with 12 points.

Rider junior Rich Baker (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg), making his first start for the Broncs, compiled 12 points. "I had a felling Richie would play well tonight," said Harnum. "He's been working hard and he earned a start tonight, and he made some big shots for us in the second half when Canisius was starting to come back," said Harnum.

Sophomore Laurence Young (Providence, RI/Hope) added 11 points off the bench, making three three-point field goals. Young scored eight consecutive points to give Rider a 41-23 lead.

Rider hosts the University of Delaware at the Sovereign Bank Arena Saturday afternoon.
