I may be reading too much, but I always suspected the Norman Rockwell one was the aftermath of a rectal temp. Why? The boy's legs are positioned as if he just rose from his stomach. If he was having an oral temp, his legs would have out in front of him. He is sitting on his legs which is more consistent with the fact that he was on his stomach.

This one is neither. I'm not sure why a "doc" is holding a deep-fry / candymaking thermometer. Unless, of course, the "doc" is one in the same sense that I am. I've used candy thermos in ladies' bottoms for fun.
