New to this environment -- Naima K. Wde, 08:17:03 08/26/03 Tue
Hi Everyone on the Education Committee;
I (Naima), just want to let you all know that I am very new to this chat room environment. Please allow me time to read carefully, and get use to responding and participating in the conversation. I am planning on attending an informational session for grant seekers , for an application being funded by the Vermont Humanities Council. They encourage applcations for the following programs: public programs, and strengthening the humanties in education for K-12. Ann Rider- we should talk more about this one. $15,000 max grant amount. The information sessions begin: Thursday, Sept 4- Dorothy A. Memorial Library, Williston VT, & Tuesday, September 9, 2-4pm , Rutland Free Library, Rutland VT. I will be out of town working for the Tues September 9- session,. But I'll try and attend the Thurs Sept. 4 session in Williston.
If anyone is interested on the committee is interested in helping me apply for the BAI humanities in art education for K- 12 please do let me know.
Thanks ,
Naima K. Wade

Minutes of Meeting of Ed Advisory Group, 12/01 -- Sally Warren, 08:22:29 12/17/01 Mon
Attending were: Barber, Bellizi, Stone, Warren. We met at the Backside and then toured the Latchis.
Frank reminded us that the aim of BAI is "to provide space for..." We have suggested that two large studio spaces be created in addition to the stage spaces that are already envisioned. Beyond this recommendation, the group felt that we could not reasonably continue to brainstorm ed. opportunities unless we were joined with the Art Committee. All of our wonderful ideas pre-suppose staff/admin to provide outreach and energy. We are not sure that staffing is in our purview.
We were assigned the task of making sure that the ed content and space included opportunities for diversity. we discussed the following ideas at some length.
Multi-generational mentoring;
Providing after-school teaching space;
Canvassing community to find their unmet ed needs.
We are not sure that diversity is something that the Ed Grp can address, if our discussion is confined to space.
Other Questions and Concerns:
What is not happening in town, because of lack of space?
Physically, the art space needs a system for disposing of toxic waste water - eg plaster mold or photog. waste
This is the jist of the meeting, not verbatim notes. Submitted with Holiday Flourishes by S. Warren

EdComm structure -- Frank, 05:54:12 12/19/01 Wed
I will be proposing two possible directions for the EdComm at the Executive Committee meeting tomorrow morning: 1) That we combine EdComm and Arts Advisory and add more "ed" people to that group. 2) That we maintain the committee as a separate entity and expand it to include many more areas of education so that we can consider all possible ways in which BAI can facilitate conversations and activity around this piece of our mission.

Mentoring -- orionb, 07:39:11 12/14/01 Fri
Just to break this idea out of my previous message so it's findable: As I recall, I wanted to see mentoring collaborations between good appropriate gurus occupying our spaces and students/programs at the high schools, BUHS or the soon-to-be John Dewey. Said gurus might be artists etc working in a studio space, or one of the entrpreneurs --e.g., the restaurateur, the brewer, the importer of South Asian art goods, whatever.
Perhaps the Latchis Project [hereinafter LP] could become a sort of incubator for mentoring -- although I'm fairly sure some companies are trying now or have tried to do it in the past. What effects does such an effort have on any institution -- cost, accomplishment of mission, identification of future workforce, etc? Are there secrets of success?
How could an effort by LP translate into an area-wide integration of industry with education?

Some ideas about use of our chat room -- Orion Barber, 11:52:42 12/10/01 Mon
Wow! What have you got us into, Sal? This is neat. Rigth away Ilook upon this as a way to avoid my -- or anyone's--having to keep minutes; Iim a lousy scribe. Maybe if each of us will faithfully try to ger down HERE whatever brilliance we expressed with a full mouth at our last lunch meeting b4 forgetting it, we can have a semblance of minutes and at least save our ideas. We're brainstorming toward some kind of recommendation to the full board for when we own the place.
As I recall, I wanted to see mentoring collaborations between good appropriate gurus occupying our spaces and students/programs at the high schools, BUHS or the soon-to-be John Dewey. Said gurus might be artists etc working in a studio space, or one of the entrpreneurs --e.g., the restaurateur, the brewer, the importer of South Asian art goods, whatever.
I'll try to think more -- soooo hard.

Star Trek -- Frank Bellizia, 09:43:01 12/07/01 Fri
Coming into these rooms makes me feel like a character on Star Trek entering a new solar system. Not sure I am doing this right--this is a test. Anyone listening??

RE: BAI educ. committee -- Sally Warren, 12:08:45 12/06/01 Thu
Hi Everyone, Orion has made us a chat room. hoooray. My first topic of conversation is about class rooms for teaching and painting backdrops. It seems to me that we need two (2). One for painting and one for mucking. One for teaching while backdrops are being assembled in the other one. I can't imagine needing more than 2 at the beginnning. They can be rented by the hour or be part of the theater space rental depending on who is asking.
What do you think? To respond to this message with 500 words or less, use the "Reply to this message" and then the "Message subject" line. For long messages use "Type your message here" box. You must sign you name. To start a new message strand double click on "Post new message"

I am quite new to this enviornment. However, it would be helpful if the author of the message could identify themselves briefly so that the uninformed might have a chance of following along - I am a new board member of BAI on the fundraising committee, therefore discussions about future plans are of interest to me and the committee. Thanks Becky Day
