The police don't enforce the law, their job is to only identify and arrest those who in their estimation have broken the law. The enforcement comes in the form of pain inflicted on those who have broken the law, and that is a matter decided on by unelected and thus unaccountable government officials (Judges). The laws are made up by supposedly elected officials (often with little to no popular support, getting in by luck of the draw from the few who still bother to vote), once elected, a politician becomes unaccountable for his or her actions until the next election (getting fired is not much of a punishment for screwing the commons), which means that the laws we have are designed to favor only those who get to make them up. Once a law is cast, it is cast in stone because historically laws are rarely ever repealed because that is something that generally does not work in the favor of unaccountable politicians.

On another matter but of similar consequence, is that once a government official makes a deal, it too ends up being cast in stone under the excuse that it is 'legally binding'. How convenient!

So we have plenty of bad deals such as NAFTA (and NATO, etc), that no matter how bad a deal it may be for the commons, our supposedly elected officials view it as being cast in stone because they individually profit from the deal more so than if the deal was called off.

The bottom line is that the deals and laws always will favor those who draft them up *if* those who draft them up are left unaccountable for their actions.

If politicians were hung for acts of treason, then we'd see a lot less treason. Firing the bastards once every 4 years only makes them laugh on the way to the bank.
