You have to remember that, although the story is set in a fantasy world, it is real. Elaborate makeup is a big problem. Until they can hire real aliens, making people look alien is a problem. The colored stuff contains metal dyes. It has to be hard to remove or it would sweat off in the lights so the stuff that takes it off can be as much a problem as the make up itself.

Plus allergies can develop, like poor Mr. Strait suffered. Michael Dorn and Brent Spiner both had permanent skin damage from seven years of makeup. So, while a one shot alien is no problem, day after day after day can cause anything from a mild rash to a near fatal reaction.

I do know that the new character will be male and will actually WANT to do an action/adventure show and will understand the limitations of the genre, unlike some people, who expected serious drama and found themselves in a scifi show with explosions and were surprised to find that character development is NOT a big priority in adventure shows.
