When You�re Dead

The comforter is bunched against
the wall, sheets bent into legs.
A boy sits in his room, white
walls smoky in the dark.
Music becomes more vivid when the lights
go out. The word �August� means
so much more when sung.

She hasn�t called him back and no,
no he won�t pick up the phone, but
he can�t pull his eyes away from it:
a motorcycle accident on his desk.
The trick is to abandon hope and then
the whole thing bleeds into entertainment.

The boy, well he was a boy
last year, he needs to shave.
It pacifies her, his smooth face, but he
clings to the comfort stubble brings.

The sheets move as if they are breathing,
the way dead things seem to sway
in the absence of light; the way
her face would wobble when she cried.
