I watched Autumn die with a soft sigh of white, wintry dust,
and somehow the frozen current swirled between small spaces that would allow nothing else.

The cold doesn�t frighten me, only saddens me,
as my eyes drift downward toward the nothingness of white.
They say that white is every colour,
but it only looks like nothingness to me.

But a child of The White I am,
the white of a name,
the white of a people,
the white that is winter,
oughtn�t I be accustomed to this?

And I was once the white of empty purity,
the white of Communion dresses and altar cloths,
white walls in a cold, efficient house�perhaps
remembering these things makes the snow seem paradoxically tainted in its blankness, its emptiness.

As it falls downward, downward, and the sky is tinted pink with the streetlights,
I recall that no whiteness is total.
