In Re the birdies . jays, crows, magpies, and ravens oh also nutcrakers are members of the corvid family of birds. most if not all are nest preditors they eat both eggs and young. They also have the highest IQ of all the bird families . They get some of our nests every year . Between them the raccoons and douglas red squirrels its a wonder any nests survive. The parent birds will renest if its early in the season after losing a nest or two they do not renest in the same place if they lose a clutch or nestlings. Oh then they have to contend with the cowbirds in my area they are nest parasites. they leave their eggs in the nests of smaller song birds and usually only their young survive . We have baby birds out of the nests now saw some baby juncos being fed by their mama or papa a couple days ago . juncos have two or three batches of youngsters every year . I love to watch the parents teach the little ones to eat . hunt for food , and bathe usully when the youngsters are out of the nest they are eating seeds and not insects except for those species who eat insects and fruit all their lives. The band tailed pigeons not to be confused with common rock doves feed their babies predigested seeds as does the american gold finch most of the rest of them feed babies insects when they are still on the nests.
