Subject: Dance floor makes a difference

FWIW, the flooring at your dance studio can make a big difference in injury rates. Its a big investment of time and money, and the studio owners have to literally rebuild their dance floor to make the main improvement we did, so I'm not saying you should be demanding this from your schools. But our experience showed big reductions in injuries, so I thought I'd share. If any dance studio owners want more information for next time they are building a floor, they can respond here for more information if they want.

We had a "sprung-ish" floor at our old studio similar to what is built at a lot of feises on top of concrete and we had a lot of injuries. We added 3/4" thick plyometric subflooring under our "sprung-ish" floor when we moved locations, and saw a significant decrease in injuries when we moved to the new flooring. We also added marley on top of our plywood which further reduces joint impact and also reduces injuries due to slipping. In hindsight, I wish we tracked injuries, because it would have been great to quantify the improvement. I can't quantify it, but it was clear to us that our injuries reduced significantly from those changes.
