the 1)inconsistency of people wearing them, 2)the large number of people who do not wear them correctly, and 3)ESPECIALLY anyone who is contagious (and may not even know it yet) not wearing one.

The last one is the MOST important component to masks being effective. Masks are meant more to CONTAIN illness to the infected person than to prevent catching it (though it does decrease your chances of getting sick if you do wear one) - if its worn correctly.
There's a hilarious explanation out there comparing masks to wearing pants when someone pees.....look it up!
Needless to say, if we could count on the CORRECT people wearing a mask when it is needed, or staying out of venues when sick, then we would all have a much greater chance of staying healthy at these things.

Finally, just because something is not --100%-- efective does NOT mean it is a waste of time.

For all viruses, with each person it infects (even if it just makes you sick for a couple days), the virus gets millions of chances to mutate....millions of chances to become deadly, or highly contagious, or even jump species, as the avian flu might be doing right now. Even though the rate of a dangerous mutation is very low, why give it that many chances? That's why reducing the spread of viruses through simple, effective means is a worthwhile endeavor, along with the more well known reasons like not making somone who is at risk sick, etc.

Thanks for giving me something to do in my down time here at the lab, where my sick-with-a cold coworkers and parents with sick kids voluntarily wear masks when appropriate..... and we tend to stay virus free because of it.
