Subject: original reason ubf had no communion/baptism
In reply to: Tom F 's message, "Thoughts to your response..." on 14:05:00 10/11/04 Mon

Tom,

I just want to rpovide an answer to the point you brought up about communion and baptism. This answer was provided by someone who knew EE and Barry well back in the old days of ubf. I promised that person I would not reveal their name here, so don't bother asking. If anyone doubts this story, you could probably verify this yourself by calling a person involved in Korea back then like Dave Ross of YWAM.

The reason is that the Presbyterian Mission, to whom Barry was supposed to be accountable, never authorized Sara Barry to perform either communion or baptism. In fact, she was not an ordained missionary to Korea, as the S. Pres. Mission did not ordain any women as missionaries at that time.

Then along came Mr. EE Chang Woo. He claimed to have been studying at some seminary, and also claimed that his father was a Presbyterian elder, so he was allowed by the Pres. Mission to work as an assistant to Sara Bury. EE covered some of the points in some of his old letters, like where he said he "was going to make Barry his assistant in 10 years, etc." But, EE Chang Woo was also never authorized by the S. Pres. Mission to conduct communion or baptism.

ubf took money from the S. Pres. Mission for a while, not sure how long, there may or may not be records of this at the Mission historical doc depository. I have contacted them but the records are not so organized, so someone would have to go there and search thru them by hand. My guess is that there is some record there of how much money ubf (which means EE Chang Woo) received from the Pres. Mission.

Now, even after they broke away from the Pres. Mission so many years ago, they place no value at all on communion or baptism. If you read the EE manuscripts, he spiritualizes these issues into something else, such as communion means taking up the cross, or baptism means dying to one's self. He limits the meaning of the words to make baptism and communion irrelevant.
