In UBF, we were taught that to obey God you must obey your shepherd. If your shepherd gives you direction and you reply that through your prayer and Bible study that you will not follow that direction, your shepherd will rebuke you for not following spiritual order.
Basically, UBF teaches that to obedience to God is revealed through obedience to man. One of my shepherds misapplied Jesus command to love God with all of your heart, soul, mind, and strength and to love your neighbor as yourself. When I would protest and question my shepherd(s), instead of obeying absolutely as they expected, I was told that I had no love for my shepherds. Then, I was told that because I did not love my shepherds (neighbors in this case)that I did not really love God. I was told that if I really loved and obeyed God that I would love and obey my shepherds.
UBF places so much emphasis on proving your love to God and obedience to God by showing your love and obedience to shepherds. In UBF, the idea that obeying shepherds can be overruled by the command to obey God is considered 'having no practical faith.'

In Christ,
