Personally, I never heard that Peter was the first pope in UBF. Nevertheless, I always thought that UBF shepherds expected their sheep to regard them with the same reverance as the pope. Just as Catholics are directed to accept that when the pope speaks from the pulpit, he is speaking God's word, UBF shepherds direct their sheep to accept that their direction and teachings are directly from God. Actually, the UBF shepherd-sheep relationship is more severe than the Catholic church members' relationship to the pope. As I understand it, Catholics only accept the pope's word as directly from God when the pope gives a formal address from the pulpit. In UBF, the shepherd expects the sheep to accept that the shepherd's word is always directly from God. This includes the Sunday message, 1:1 Bible study, prayer meetings, and even prayer topics and annoucements. I find many similarities between the relationship Catholics have with the pope and the way UBF shepherds and sheep are expected to relate to each other.
