Here is a quote from the article by Claire Borowick, The Family's spokesperson

"When he was in the group, he was happy, well-adjusted," Borowik said. "He never considered himself as an abused individual until he started contacting our strongest opponents. That's when he started to reinterpret his whole life." Borowick claims that if the Rodriquez would have just remained in The Family and served their mission, he would be fine. His problem was listening to people outside the group.

This reminds me of when my chapter director told me not to read the websites talking about UBF. He said "it is a waste of time." Cults generally claim that if their members would stop talking with outsiders and former insiders who criticize them, there would be no problem. Just go fishing, attend all the meetings, and write testimonies. Concentrate on your mission! Co-work and follow the spiritual order! The truth is that in the long run our lives are much better after realizing the truth and getting out.
