It is interesting that ICC uses the "disciple/discipler" terminology, while UBF uses the "shepherd/sheep" terminology to describe their "one-over-another" relationships. But the basic paradigm of discipling and shepherding is pretty much the same, so I like to speak of the "shepherding/discipling" paradigm. By the way, UBF uses not only the shepherd/sheep terminology, but also the "discipling" terminology, they call it a little bit different, "raising disciples" (both terms cannot be found in the Bible). In Germany, UBF calls it "Jünger-Erziehung." The word "Jünger" means "disciple" and the word "Erziehung" means something close to "education", but more in the direction of parenting or child education. The word "Erziehung" has a touch of paternalism and authority.

The passage of John 21:15-18 is usually the last sermon, the culmination of a very emotional 3 or 4 day UBF "Bible conference." They orchestrate the whole conference in a way, that when it comes to the following passage,

Again Jesus said, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me?" He answered, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you."
Jesus said, "Take care of my sheep."

you know that it is a question directed to you, not to Peter. You know that "Take care of my sheep" means "become a UBF shepherd." You know that if you don't do it, you wouldn't love Jesus. Jesus, who died for you, as you learned the day before. You are in an emotional turmoil. You love Jesus. He has died for you. How can you reject his command to become a UBF shepherd? This is the strategy UBF is using. It is similar to the manipulative program layed out in ICC's studies of the "first principles".

John, can you elaborate on Joe's question?
