Subject: Howard got a bum rap for that remark. He did not mean it as a racial slur. He meant it as a compliement.

He and Jimmy the Greek were pilloried for PRAISING black athletes. It's interesting that Cassius Clay (aka Muhammad Ali) was one of Howard's best friends, which should tell you something.

I think the press creates a lot of this. It was the press who ruined Howard Dean's presidential chances four years ago.

Suppose they said that Dean was "fantastic" and "had a great sense of humor after losing"? If most reporters spun it that way, maybe the Democrats would not have had Kerry, who basically sleepwalked through his campaign and lost to a man who was so eminently beatable.

It bothers me that the press, rather than the voters, may anoint this year's candidates. Now that's a sad thought, isn't it?

Just as sad, the current crop of candidates is really nothing to write home about.

I am independent and I am leaning toward Guiliani. But he is acting as if he wants people to knock on his door and it may not happen. Very poor strategy. Meanwhile McCain is getting more attention than he should be. People have short memories.
