Subject: Why don't we all discuss the issue...just under what circumstances, if ever, and to what extent, it is permissible to torture (and what the word means)

After all, this is a DISCUSSION board, right?

So what are your opinions, everyone? Under what circumstances, if ever, should torture be allowed? And just what kind of torture?

Now, we can start from the ultimate scenario: having highly reliable information that a bomb that could kill many thousands is going to go off in hours unless we can find it and disarm it, but having no idea where it is, yet having in custody a person whom we are virtually certain knows where it is.

Now maybe you believe that even under such situations torture of any kind is impermissible, and if so, then by all means defend your position.

Or maybe you believe that in that situation, some torture IS permissible, and you may defend that as well.

Then we get into the areas in between....situations less imminent, or involving something less catastrophic...Anyway, from here let's discuss just when and how we would draw the line.

Anybody willing. Oh, and let's talk about this IN PRINCIPLE. No "Well, unlike that no-good politician A...." stuff. Can we try to do this? Like I said, this is a discussion board, right?
