In reply to:
Mercedes (the only way I would ever Hurt someone is if they were trying to kill my husband or son. I would try to knock a gun or knife out of their hand or knock them down to the ground.)

Okay, Mercedes, you've answered, but if you were in such a position (the extreme position I gave above), and knew with certainty that there was a bomb, and that it would go off in hours, and knew with certainty that the suspect knew where it was, and decided to just yell at him or talk to him, and you had time to disarm the bomb, and the person said nothing, and the bomb went off, you said you'd deal with the consequences.
Okay, but what are you going to tell all the surviving loved ones of the people that died about why you found it more important to not waterboard than to at least try to save half a million lives? And when they say that your opinion was wrong, what are you going to tell them? That you are just a more moral person than them?
I don't anticipate that this scenario will happen very often. But ultimately we may have to ask at times what's worse, letting people die or engaging in torture.
And as I said, I believe torture should be avoided if at all possible. But I also believe loss of life should be avoided if at all possible. When it's one of the other, we have difficult decisions to make.
But that's exactly what you'd expect a sadistic torture-lover like me to say, isn't it?
I respect your position. You could not engage in even something like waterboarding even to save many, many lives. And I would never ask for you to be put in such a position. Do you respect anyone who disagrees in only those extreme circumstances?
And what the past administration did or didn't do, while relevant to other questions (and if they applied torture just to get confessions and not to stop future acts they should be prosecuted in my opinion), is not an answer to the questions I'm asking here.
