Subject: I think the main issue here is whether he should have publicly been "outed." That was, in my view, wrong, particularly since C. has contributed so much.

In reply to: Much ado about nothing 's message, "I think you are right. I honestly don't think Chronicler meant any harm. He probably thought he was being helpful. Of course, he kept doing it long after a vocal minority made it clear how much they hated it. He probably should've just let it go" on Sat, April 05, 2008 9:16:12

If I may be candid, I will take be a bit more forceful than the first poster, with whom I totally agree.

I know Barbara was upset. And rightfully so.

But I think that a less Draconian approach would have been far more appropriate.

And yes, I think she was very wrong to do what she did in the manner she did it.

Her action resulted in a huge thread which, quite honestly, is bringing out many feelings of anger in people.

And the hurt is going to probably last for a while.

By doing what Barbara did perpetuated this.

It has forced people to take sides.

This could have all been avoided by Barbara issuing a warning rather than choosing to out this individual.

I am not for one second condoning what Chronicler constantly did. It was, to be truthful, rather juvenile and surely unnecessary.

A stern warning from Barbara would have been more than justified. As the first poster here said, a message saying "if you do this again, I will reveal what I know about you" would have easily done the trick.

Barbara has actually, by the explicit rules of her board, allowed if not encouraged this behavior.

She has told people that they can post anonymously.

And I think that can be a good thing. In fact I am posting this anonymously. I do not wish to be attacked by name, by Barbara or anyone else, for expressing my feelings on this.

Unless I am missing something, Barbara has not barred people from using two different monickers.

But Barbara should realize that if you ALLOW anonymous posting, people will on occasion decide to use two different identities.

I think that "role playing" on message boards (with people "playing characters") is very common.

Does that mean it's bad? I would say not necessarily.

Whether or not it should have, it obviously bothered Chronicler that people posted about something that had been previously posted. Yes, he could have criticized people using his monicker of Chronicler.

I assume that he he preferred to use "SP" so that HE would not be flamed and that his "good name" would not be besmirched.

And that was PERFECTLY WITHIN THE RULES OF BARBARA'S BOARD.

He was NOT impersonating anyone else.

Is it really any different from Sheb Wooley doing records under his own name and doing other records with an alter ego of Ben Colder?

I don't think so.

I think that the decision to out Chronicler in the manner that it was done was done almost solely out of anger. And that is sad.

Have any of you out there ever hurt a loved one (either physically, mentally or emotionally) out of anger and then wished you could take it back?

Actions can be devastating but words can also be.

I believe that all of us are sensitive, to some degree. If you are a person who is not easily hurt, consider yourself among the lucky ones.

I love the Celebrity Obits board and I have posted there on occasion. Like the first poster here, I was thinking of adding my thoughts to the thread over there, but it is already way way too long.

It would not at all surprise me if Chronicler decides not to post there anymore.

I think I have been a visitor and participant in these boards for about six years.

I remember someone named John who used to post as both himself and as Smarty Jones. That was an open secret, he admitted posting as Smarty. And most people enjoyed that.

But John also had a dark side if you will. I don't know if "bipolar" is an accurate description. But I do know that he could be sweet as sugar one day and then be nasty the next. He would blow hot and cold. And his messages were generally long and repetitive.

What did him in was when he viciously attacked someone for using the name "The Happy Reaper," with absolutely no justification. That individual had the blessing of Barbara to use that monicker, which was basically inspired by the "let's celebrate a life rather than a death" attitude.

John didn't get it. So he flamed "Reaper" as if "Reaper" was the lowest snake on this planet.

And others on the board took him to task.

Then John did the unthinkable and publicly posted the password. He basically said "the hell with this, go ahead and bar me." He created several hours of work for Barbara and she then rightfully barred him from both boards.

My personal feeling is that what John did constantly -- using his OWN name but viciously attack others, in many cases over nonsense -- was FAR WORSE than what Chronicler did as SP.

Keep in mind that SP was basically a "one-trick pony" so to speak.

Well, okay, I have said more than maybe I should have.

But this whole thing has bothered me a bit.

I think maybe we all should take a chill pill, lighten up a bit and realize that these message boards are not the most important thing in anyone's lives.

We should try to be nice and try to think what impact our words and deeds have on others.

And I think it is incumbent on Barbara and others who run boards like this to count to 3 before reacting in anger and doing something that could have more far-reaching consequences than are desired or appropriate.

Peace to all.

Was it really THAT important that the culprit be exposed and villified?

Did publicly saying that Chronicler is SP make Barbara feel good?

I suppose it did. And, as moderator of the board, she had every right to do so.

But what she has accomplished is something that I am sure will hurt Chronicler far more than he will admit. And maybe many people will not look at his posts the same way anymore.

I rarely come to this board anymore but knowing my name would be taken in vain, I decided to look.BarbaraSat, April 05, 2008 11:49:18
