Thanks for your note. Yes, in California there were (are) Native-Americans. A very good point! After reviewing the scene, it seems that Spanish is spoken by the nanny. Also, in an early scene, Hopkins and the nanny exchange a few words in Spanish over baby Elena. Since translation can add drama and suspense in communication, Hollywood used this method. Your point would have been a far better way to present this scene.

More on language: Mel Gibson's "Passion" has the characters speaking ancient languages.
