Mayria steeled herself for a blow, or a scream, or anything.
She would take it, but she would not like it. It had occurred to her that she didn't have to take the blow if it came, but she would anyway. She deserved it, for being so clumsy.

She fiddled with her hat a moment, wanting to ride closer to Leo, but frightened to. After all, she was not his shadow, and he would not protect her. She would have to do it herself. She kneed her gelding closer, her feet tapping a stacatto rhythm on the horse's side as she did. She was only a few meters away. Kayla was closer, but she didn't look to be talking to Leo. Mayria wanted to. She knew that-or at least she thought that- Leo had seen Cairhien before, and she wanted to know what it was like.

Kneeing her gelding a little closer, she looked apprehensively, first at Kayla, and then at Leo, who seemed, happily oblivious to the struggle between the two women. She seemed to be ignoring Mayria, so she crept as close as she dared, almost close enough to touch.
