The Problem:
Politicians dipping their snouts into the public purse.

The Social Invention:
Politicians are typically in an unusual position in that they can vote themselves hefty pay rises whenever they feel like it.

In Australia (for one), politicians fees have grown far far beyond the inflation rate over the last few decades, while the quality of politicians has not.

They say if that you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. In that case, if you pay lots of peanuts you get lots of monkeys.

One solution might be to tie politicians fee increases (which would include superannuation and all their other perks) to the consumer price index, as is often the case with welfare payments. Their annual income would then be relative to the average payments to old age pensioners, invalid pensioners, unemployed, single mothers etc.

It would take pretty ethical politicians to implement a change like this, though it could be popular amongst voters.
