Hothouse incubator for recycling innovations

The following is adapted from an item entitled 'Hothouse of eco-innovation, Stavanger' which appeared in the Norwegian Ideas Bank (Stiftelsen Idebanken, PO Box 2126 Grünnerlokka, Norway, tel 00 47 2203 4010; fax 00 47 2236 4060; e-mail: idebanken@online.no; web: www.idebanken.no).

'For Norwegians with innovatory recycling ideas, Veksthuset provides premises on favourable terms'
For Norwegians with innovatory recycling ideas, Veksthuset (meaning 'the hothouse') helps to incubate their schemes by providing premises on favourable terms for up to three years.

Projects that as a result have been successfully launched commercially include: newspapers made into equipment for trapping oil spills; used clothing made into blankets for refugee camps; and new ways of processing food wastes into animal feed.

Veksthuset aims to fertilise new ideas. Inventors and entrepreneurs are offered both office facilities and space in one of four factory buildings with a combined floor space of 1,200 square metres. There is also land available for purchase by existing firms.

The aim is to create a shared pool of competence in everything to do with recycling and waste management.

Veksthuset is linked to a wider project - Prosjekt Miljöhjörnet - which brings together the municipalities of Stavanger and Sandnes, Rogaland County, Statoil, Fretex (the Salvation Army's recycling enterprise) and NOAS, a firm that handles hazardous waste disposal.

Veksthuset is based at Gausel in Stavanger and is run by IVAR - an inter-municipal body responsible for water supply, sewage and waste treatment in the Stavanger region.
