Tasmania is the island state of Australia. We are also the smallest state and currently woodchip more than the rest of Australia combined. The largest woodchipping company in the southern hemisphere is based here and has its grip on all the old growth forests that are left as well as having the support of the state and federal government. Tasmania is unique, beautiful and in need of world wide support to end the logging in our old growth forests. The price of woodchip is under $10AUD a tonne. For what was once a magnificent forset tree with potential for craftsmen who are not even allowed to buy the timber and yet would be paying so much more. Our foresrty practices are a joke and it wont cease till there are no old growth forests left. The industry runs at a loss and has done for years and is not sustainable, to preserve our forest for ecotourism would create more jobs now and for the future and keep what remaining forests we have intact. Please help our plight and email the Australian prime minister with your concerns as well as the premier of Tasmania, Jim Bacon and his henchman deputy Paul Lennon. We are at a critical point, to see hundreds and hundreds of log trucks on a daily basis, day in day out is devastating and depressing. We are losing our natural heritage because of a greedy company making deals in Japan to fulfill woodchip export quotas. It is sickening and disheartening but please take a little time to email our prime minister, John Howard and our premier. Our state government has made noises about ending the woodchipping of old growth forests in 10 years, it will all be gone at the end of 3years or less. To fly over the state in a plane and view the destruction makes you cry. The forestry practices are to dynamite old habitat trees, to clear fell everything, to pile up and burn all remaining timber which could be used for fire wood for heating, so no-one gets to use it. To have mountains of unused saw-dust. To drop napalm and then poison our native animals with 1080 poison, herbicide the area and then plant a non-indigenous monoculture and have it locked away for the next 20 years.Our roads are ruined, they place 'scenic walkways' in small patches of forest to showcase their environmental policies yet a walk less than 50 metres away and you are in clear fell devastation. The water catchment areas are polluted, the small creeks and rivulets are drying up, we have widespread erosion....it goes on and on, and to top it off we are building a massive wood-burning power station in the back yard of our forests under the greatest hole in the ozone layer on earth. Please help us stop this madness.
