Multinational Corporations

Corporate Social Responsibility

In the age of globalization, there are also global eyes, and corporations are being held more accountable for their environmental choices and labor practices. Watchdog and independent monitoring groups play a large role in making sure company's practices are above board. However, in your research, be aware that many groups, on either side of a dispute, have an agenda, a source in the human rights industry said. Here are a few sites about corporate social responsibility:

Company Websites: Many companies who produce their goods abroad are not only monitoring their factory, but reporting their findings on the Web. Athletic shoe company Nike has been a target of many labor citations. Nike and Reebok both provide human rights sections on their Websites that give basic facts about their factories and human-rights efforts. Check out this chart I received after requesting information from Nike.

CorpWatch (www.corpwatch.org): This non-profit's slogan is "Holding Corporations Accountable." This site has information on globalization, oil, sweatshops, trade agreements and the WTO. You can also search the site for the organization you are researching.

Corporate Accountability Project (www.corporations.org): This group has a critical eye toward global corporations. The section on Corporate Dirt is interesting.

Corporate Social Responsibility Newswire (www.csrwire.com): This wire service is a great way to search for an organization's ethics, human rights records and charitable contributions.

Environmental Background Information Center (www.ebic.org): This nonprofit group assists grassroots organizations by tracking records of corporate polluters, and providing environmental justice mapping and strategic assistance.

Global Exchange (www.globalexhange.org): This human-rights organization says it promotes environmental, political, and social justice around the world and is a watchdog group for corporate accountability, chronicling efforts by Gap and Nike to clean up their sweatshops. This activist group has articles on globalization as well.

OSHA (www.osha.gov): The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration is a good place to go to check that U.S. labor laws are being followed for companies operating the United States. A search for Japan-based Mitsubishi showed that a subsidiary has been cited for a fatal crane collapse in Milwaukee.

Verite (www.verite.org): This organization has monitored 600 factories worldwide and has spoken with thousands of workers. Although you probably won't find specific information on an company's practices, the organization has a newsletter and is a reputable watchdog group.
