Subject: Latest Freshwater Winter Trout Stocking Information

This winter, the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife plans to release more than 12,000 rainbow trout into selected lakes throughout the state pending Fish and Game Council approval at their November 13 meeting. The stocking is part of the annual Winter Trout Stocking Program. This will be the second year of this extremely successful program which offers anglers increased fishing opportunities during the winter months.

"The peak fishing period for New Jersey trout anglers occurs in the spring, however, fall and winter fishing has gained popularity among many anglers," said Division Director Bob McDowell. "With that in mind, the Division has developed a winter program to increase angling opportunities, add variety and complement the already extremely popular spring and fall trout stocking programs."

A total of 24 lakes geographically distributed throughout the state will be stocked with 12,940 rainbow trout raised at the Pequest Trout Hatchery averaging 11 inches in length. Targeted lakes range in size from five to 100 acres and have shoreline access and/or boat launching sites. Waters to be stocked are approved trout stocked lakes and exclude lakes that were stocked in the fall.

In North Jersey, 15 lakes will be stocked from November 19-21, 2001. In South Jersey, nine lakes will be stocked from January 3-4, 2002. This time period will provide increased opportunity to anglers that are off from work and school during the holidays.

Tagged trout will be stocked at specific lakes as part of the Division's program evaluation efforts. Anglers are urged to return these tags when found.

Interstate Highway 195 will serve as the dividing line between North and South Jersey lakes with the exception of Topenemus Lake, which will be stocked along with South Jersey waters.
