Carl -- First thing to do is join Virtual Vairs, which is an e-mail group consisting of some of the brightest Corvair owners and mechanics anywhere. The web address to subscribe is: www.vv.corvair.org

Next, I'd get parts catalogs from:
Clark's Corvair Parts -- www.corvair.com
Corvair Underground -- www.corvairunderground.com

Next, join a local Corvair club (if you plan on keeping the car). Or, go to the national Corvair club's website -- www.corvair.org -- and look under "Local Chapters" and contact the club nearest to you and get hooked up with someone who can help you work on the car.

I'd then purchase a Chevrolet shop manual for a '61. These can be purchased through the parts vendors listed above, or usually on the online auction eBay. I'm far from a knowledgeable Corvair mechanic, so I wouldn't even begin to know what exactly to tell you. But I guarantee you'll get your questions answered on Virtual Vairs. Hope this helps!
