Hi Bob,

I can shed some light on the firehouse comment! That message was from my mother, and in the town she lives in (from which I just moved last March to Chicagoland) has a population of about 9,000. We had a small, older firehouse, which was evidently in a state of disrepair in recent years. The town's "pet project" became building a new firehouse, and the referendum was voted on and passed (the mayor was a long standing asst. fire chief, thus this was a pet project). The firehouse that was proposed, and passed, is monstrous. It's so big for a town of our size, and supplied with tons of additional equipment. The icing on the cake is that at the same time, our region (made up on our town and one other), had no high school. Kids went to 4 other area high schools by contracts with those towns. Since 1969, the issue of building a high school had been tossed around, and the issue reached its peak interest at the same time as the firehouse issue. It was a heated issue, and the town had definite sides to the issue (as well as the other town we're a region with). I think it took 9 referenda to get the high school passed (finally!), while the firehouse went through without a problem on the first round.

I'll work on getting a picture.

Jennifer
