A couple of the ladies posting on this thread have mentioned the idea of giving some enemas to girls before they begin having periods so that when their periods do start coming, the enemas that mom will probably need to give them will not be a new experience. I can tell you from my experience that getting girls used to enemas is a great idea. I did not do that, and really regretted it. My daughter is now 14, and her periods started coming about 2 years ago. The first enema she ever had was an enema she needed because of the first period she ever had, and I had an extremely emotional child to deal with who was asking me if God hated girls because he gave them periods with its constipation and cramps and bloating, etc. I held her in my arms and quietly talked to her for at least an hour before I gave the enema. She was not a happy girl and I was not a happy mom. Things have improved every month since then, but if I had to do it over I would have found reasons to give her some enemas starting at around 9 or 10 so that the fear of the nozzle and the bag would be gone by the time periods started.

I have given both my girls enemas from an early age as both of them seem to have inherited the family constipation problem.
It has never been a problem, except when they were about 4 or 5. I have always given them motherly loving enemas.
When they came close to the time of their period starting,I started to give them enemas, explaining it would ease the cramping. They had very little craming and almost none at all with the enemas.
They would come to me when they wanted me to give them enemas, and there was never any problem about them taking an enema. Many times they would start to experience some minor constipation , and would ask me to give them a little enema, which quickly cured the cramps and they were back to their old selves within an hour. They liked me to give them enemas which I did through high school and college, and still do when they feel a little out of sorts. Even though they can certainly give themselves an enema, they will come over to the house and say, "MOM, would you give me one of your good little enemas". I am pleased to oblige their wishes, and know they still enjoy their enemas.

It will be a cold day in hell before I ever ask my mother to give me another enema.

To M.L.
Why not? Don't you like enemas? Do you only give them to yourself without any help from your mom? How old are you?

I have a loving and close mother/daughter relationship.
When my daughter came to me when she was not feeling good I would know that she was having some constipation problems. I would just talk with her and suggest that perhaps she needed a little enema to help he feel better.
We would go into the bathroom together, and while she undressed, I would prepare the enema and proceed to give give it to her as I always have.
Does that mean that she didn't need one and only wanted me to give her an enema? I don't think so, but whatever the case, whether she actually needed one or not, I will always be there for her because we have that wonderful relationship.

I agree Sue, a skillfully given, gentle enema is one of
the most intimate, tender moments between mother and child.
In fact the very word ene-MA seems to suggest something
deeply maternal.
So much has been said and written over the years, both
for and against the use of enemas during childhood, that
I think a "commonsense attitude" is the best.
Enemas are niether essential nor harmful.
They are simply very USEFUL in certain circumstances eg:
where it is easier and quicker to deal with a problem
from the bottom end, than from the top.
It has helped my kids on several occasions, but I have
never forced them to have one.
love Jenny
