A good place to start looking for a dog is at QHS or if your not in that area a shelter close to you. I adopted a large mix breed male from the shelter 6 yrs ago. There was absolutely no information on the dog. A young man had brought him into the shelter. He said he "found" him. Morgan was in pretty rough shape. He was infested with whipworms, he had an ulcerated wound on his front leg and he was very thin. He had probably been kept as an outside dog. But, today he is a couch potato and hates to spend time outside. It will take time but I can tell you it was worth the effort. I have a great dog and there are lots of great dogs at the shelter. They may take some time and patience but it is time well spent. Drop by the shelter and see some of the castoffs of society. You may be surprised to find a new friend.
