Whether it's merited or not, I don't think a human rights violation changes names because it's revenge for a previous human rights violation. If it does, then we'd have to follow the trail all the way back to the Jewish terrorist organizations which were conducting operations against Arabs and the British before Israeli independence, yes? Or maybe we'd have to go all the way back to ancient Biblical times, when the Jews invaded and slaughtered the inhabitants of the Land of Canaan? No, I don't think the revenge angle will get us anywhere productive.
Actually, my question was more along the lines of wondering about what we, collectively, focus on as horrendous, and why. Pygmies are being enslaved, raped, ethnically cleansed, and in some cases *eaten* by neighboring tribes, but the articles on this subject are short and infrequent. Consequently, most people don't know about it, or don't really give a damn if they do. The Kurds were being smacked silly long before Saddam "gassed his own people", but that fact only became relavent when our government started looking for justification to go to war with Iraq. The fact of the matter is, the Turks are *still* smacking around their Kurds, and not only are we about to give them 6 billion bucks plus 20 billion in "loans", but we're going to let the Turks cross the border to make sure they can smack around and keep in line the Iraqi Kurds, too.
So, what makes a human rights violation? Are there objective standards, or does it depend on whether or not certain groups care?
