In reply to: longtimeresrearcher 's message, "Re: STILL DOING RECTAL TEMPS AFTER ALL THESE YEARS" on Thursday, September 08, 2016, 12:44: pm

What is often ignored in all this discussion, is the simple fact that sick children and teens often have symptoms or problems in the rectal area the doctor, nurse or caregiver have to be aware of, and it is as important to check this area as for example the throut.

Rectal temperature is a conveniant way to do this check.

Hi Knut. What are your feelings about adults taking their temperatures rectally. I am a man in my 50s and I still continue to take my temperature rectally with a glass rectal thermometer. I enjoy it very much. Also, what do you think of vaginal temperatures. Can you provide information on how to take a vaginal temperature. Thank you.

Hi

Also I still take my temp rectally and enhoy itn but I use modern digital thermometers. I have no experience with vaginal temp, but I think the procedure must be fairly the same, but one must provide the thermometer is absolute sterile, which is not so important with rectal temp.

The woman or girl must have the leg somewhat spread. Then use one hand to open the great lips and stretch so much that also the smaller lips are spread, between the smaller lips you will find the vaginal opening just beneath the urinaty opening.

I guess you need a thermometer with a long tip, and many modern digital thermometers are constructed so that they are suited also for vaginal temp. For a girl with still intact hymen, one mist find the hole in the mid of the hymen and gently put the thermometer rip through. Alternatively, one can let the thermometer lie in the chamber between the small lips and close the lips around the thermometer.

Just like rectal temp is a conveniant way of checking the rectal region on a person that is sick, vaginal temp would serve the same purpose for the genital area of girls and women.

When a young girl is sick, it is absolutely necessary to daily check her vaginal area, as well as the rectal area to detect symptoms that could signal something serious. And of cource the same is true about the genital and rectal area of young boys, and such a check can save the life of a child.

To take tempersture vaginally, would be the best way of checking a girl for symptoms, actually, but I think the society will tend to call it sexual abuse. Opening the labia and looking should however be done, for the best of the child.

I would recommend a modern digital thermometer with a long tip, because it has to be inserted rather deep and a glass thermometer could break.

If you let her lie on her back with legs spread and her knees somewahst flexed, and spread her lips wide apart, pubic hair should not be any problem. You can use pillows under each of her knees to make the position easy.

If she has good secretion, lubrication should not be necessary. Alternatively you can use the jelly of the same kind used to lubricate outside condoms.

If she lies on her side, you do not have a good view, but by using a thermometer with a long metallic tip and you negotiate it carefully while inserting it could be possible.

When you do not look well, there is a chance she gets the thermometer into her urethra instead.

Thank you very much, Knut, for your replies. The information you provided was very helpful. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Getting back to the subject of Geratherm rectal thermometers, I think they are fine for taking vaginal temperatures. But I am not a fan of using them for rectal temperatures. They are too thick. When you use them with lubricant, they slide out of your anus. So that means you have to hold it in place. And if you prefer not to use any lubricant, they are difficult to insert. Furthermore, the oral and rectal Geratherm thermometers look identical. The rectal thermometer has an oral type bulb which I think is totally inappropriate for rectal use. I like the regular thin-stemmed rectal thermometers that were in use up until the year 2000. They are anatomically correct, insert easily in the anus, and feel comfortable in the rectum. And since they were designed specifically for insertion into the rectum, they have the correct type of bulb - round, blunt, or pear-shaped. Easy and comfortable to insert and not likely to injure the rectum. I'm glad I have several in stock. I can understand the hazards of mercury toxicity, but I wish they would start producing thin-stemmed thermometers that are mercury free.

Hi Knut. I would be interested to know what your opinion is on taking rectal temperatures of adult family members. Is there an age when a parent should stop taking their children's rectal temperatures? Do you think it is appropriate for parents to continue to take their children's rectal temperatures through adolescence and continuing through adulthood, as long as there is no objection by either party? That is, if nudity and modesty are not issues of importance for members of the family. Also, is it more appropriate for a father and mother to take the rectal temperatures only of children of their own gender? In other words, father/sons and mother/daughters only?

I work at a free youth clinic for displaced, grade school age youngsters (5 to 10 years old) where the mercury glass thermometer is still used. The glass thermometer is still used in the vast majority of households in this rustic area. As at most homes, all 5 year old boys at the youth clinic get a rectal temperature taken with a glass rectal thermometer because unlike girls that same age too many of the have delays in intellectual maturity that render them prone to having a mishap with a glass oral thermometer placed in the mouth. With that being said, over the past decade there has been a gradual increase in the portion of boys over the age of 5 years old (few even 10 years old) where these delays have continued and these boy are also required to have a temperature taken rectally with a glass rectal thermometer.
Although it is common for an boy, upon being called up to the front of the waiting room to have his temperature taken "the other way", to submit to having a glass rectal thermometer mounted in his rear end while at the same (with his mouth unoccupied) to strongly express his objections while that activity is being performed on him.

I think temp should be taken rectally by parents to age 13-14. This is because rectal temp is not only temperature taking, but also a little examination of the rectal region which should be done with any kid with fever. All parts of the kid should be inspected when a kid is sick with fever or other distinct sickness with general symptoms, and the rectal region is no exception.

I think that a child that is old enough to take hisher temp properly should be allowed to do it self, and choose method self, of which 13-14 may be the appropriate age. But the kid should be asked if heshe feels any symptoms in the pelvic zones also after this age.s

But i do not think there should be any limit of age for parents to take rectal temp if the child wishes them to do so, and it should not matter who takes the temp.

The taboo about seeing or touching the intimate zones of children, even though the objective for the taboo is to hinder sexual abuse, also hinders parents to take care of the kids properly, and to put it bluntly, I am sure many kids die worldwide because of this society-forced negligence.
