Sounds familiar Tim I experienced the same thing in the fifties especially as penicillin was a relatively new wonder drug then. I know others went through the same thing because my mother would tell me about how other kids got the same treatment, I suspect that was to make me feel I wasnt the only one.It was worse if my cousins were visiting.

Did your mother let everyone watch you get an enema as well, or was that procedure off limits? An enema is much more intimate and takes some time, so I wonder if your mother respected your privacy during the enema.

I dont remember my mother allowing the family to watch me getting an enema but sometimes she would have asistance if I was being difficult about it.In hospital they werent always as concious of a childs need for privacy in those days so others might see you get an enema but usually they would put up token screens even if they werent very effective.

Fortunately my mom wasn't into enemas. The first enema I ever had was at 17. And I heard bad things about them but it wasn't bad at all. A nurse did it in a doctors office. But the pain of shots worried me way more then any enema or rectal temp could....And yes,my cousins were there when I got shots....NOT GOOD!

When I was about 6, 7 and 8 and maybe 9 my mom would give me an enema with others watching sometimes. My mom have small talk with the other person. Sometimes it would be my aunt or a neighbor lady or close friends of her. The grownups I did not mind, but sometimes my cousin (girl) who was only about 2 or 3 years older than me would be there also to watch. I do remember one time I was about 7, my moms friend was over with her daughter who was 10 at the time, maybe 11 not really sure. Mom gave me an enema with them watching. I had one sibling a younger brother and remember others watching him get an enema or shot with others around also.

Matt, what kind of equipment did your mother use when giving you your enemea? Was your enema given in the bathroom, with you on the floor in a knee chest position, or over your mother's lap?
