I am in my 60's, a baby boomer, and vividly remember having pneumonia at age 5. The doctor made a daily house call and gave me a penicillin shot in my buttocks each day. The whole family gathered when my temperature was taken and exceeded 103 degrees. My brother and sister called out the numbers as the mercury rose. I wore a red flannel sleeper with a drop seat. The flap was unbuttoned, I was on my tummy on the bed, and the Taylor Binoc rectal thermometer was inserted while my sister maneuvered for a good view of it being inserted. I saw her over my mother's lap with her panties pulled down getting her temperature taken, too. Enemas were given in the bathtub, so it was Mom and patient only. I had an aunt that filled in for my mother at times, and she was the same way with privacy. There was none except during enemas. Babies were breast fed in full view of their siblings, and many other measures were taken to insure that we all got to know what the sex organs looked like and would not have any hangups over the differences. In nursery school, boys and girls shared a bathroom with many toilets and no partitions, so you could watch the opposite sex use the toilet. We were naked in the same room for clothing changes. It helped a little, but a close up view of the anus or vagina was not easily seen because of the distance we tended to keep. The girls could see just about everything, of course. In the hospital, boys and girls were in the same ward. Rectal temperature takings and enemas and even suppositories for certain medications were given without any attempt to block the view of the other beds. Looking back on it all, it was not a bad idea. Author: jean the frenchie [Edit] Date Posted: 05:47:16 09/18/09 Fri you are right "Rich", it was not necessary bad in the past to be less concerned than today by the modesty of children and particularly that of boys. it was when a boy beguins his puberty and became a teenager that the double standard was sometimes applied in an unfair manner, even if I am convinced that a complete equality of boys and girls tenagers for the respect of modesty or privacy was not always necessary and I don't agree with these men who are always complaining in these forums about the inequality of treatmen when they were young or sometimes adults in the health field.Generally, it was not so traumatizing! Most of the time, some differences could be noticed in school showers, undressing in changing rooms, school physicals, and even at home for bathing, undressing, or for a physical examination by a doctor and so on, and some could be considered as rather normal. It is not the same for a boy tenager to be seen by an adult women and for a girl tenager to be seen by an adul man, it was a question of education and of customs and also because it was (and certainly it is still mostly the case) the mothers who cared about children and teenagers, boys or girls.
