Subject: A BSG thread for dee and me...and whoever watch that great series!

Here's what I wrote just after seeing the premiere:

"There are entertaining tv shows and there's "Battlestar Galactica". I do think it's the best thing we have got on screen of late. I loved that 2 hours premiere!

Now that is a show that keeps consistency while reinventing itself and daring new stuff.

I loved the idea of Lee losing his edge and becoming fat...he was definitely no longer Apollo!

I also loved the weird Kara/Leoben domestic life with the recurring murder and the download. Hell is in repetition! The only thing that I didn't like because I found it too easy was when they brought the little girl, Kacey and Kara ended up with some maternal concern. It bugged me also for they told us in season 2 Sharon/Helo's breeding worked because they loved each other. So what is Kacey? A fake or the evidence that there's more between Kara and Leoben than a S&M relationship?

Their twisted relationship can evoke the famous Stockolm Syndrome of course but mostly made me think of that disturbing film starring Charlotte Rampling and Dirk Bogarde in the 70's, The Night Porter.

Above all I loved how they dealt with the universal theme of occupation and the terrorism that ensues from both sides in "Occupation" and "Precipice". I couldn't help thinking of Ken Loach's movie when I watched it. It was "funny" to see Saul Tigh has become some kind of Hamas' head sending human bombs against the occupant. Because how could not anyone think of Palestian tactics when seeing this?

But the show is subtle and the religious fanatics are some of the Cylons like Leoben, not the insurgents blowing themselves. It's desperation that leads people to desperate measures like suicide bombing as Laura Roslin told Baltar, not necessarily religious belief. It echoed the matter of terrorism they already addressed in previous seasons through Tom Zarek.

I love how not manichean the show can be, how the main characters are either ambiguous or having second thoughts (like Gaetta or the guy from the New Caprica Police) or simply voicing relevant points, how we get to hear different point of views. Well, maybe except Cavil who is obviously a Mephistophelean villain !

When Baltar went to Roslin's cell his arguments were valid, and when Roslin urges Saul to stop the suicide bombing Tigh points out how naive she is and when he compares the suicide bombers to the young guys they sent in vipers against Cylons there's some sense in his reasoning too.

I loved that Sharon had become Adama's closest confident, and that she's now Mrs Agathon! And Helo is still the prettiest man around.
It's funny to see that they are all married now, Lee and Dualla, Kara and Anders (even though she kind of have two husbands now !), Tyrol and Callie, Sharon and Helo... BTW I can't help thinking that Callie won't make it.

I'm so happy that my show is back !"

Since then I thought about it, and I have more to add. I realy hope that Baltar is not a Cylon, and I found interesting that he didn't look that enamoured of Six on new Caprica. I wasn't surprised that "his Six", that is the one in his head, showed up again in the end. He prefers her. The show created a new version of narcissism: Gaius prefered her because she's him and he loves himself more than anything else!

Yes, Lee sure has softened in many ways. I know he's married to Dualla but I don't think that's going to last much longer. It doesn't seem to be the relationship she hoped it would be and I think he's pining for Starbuck down deep.I've got a feeling Dualla's not going to stay the type of character she is now. Otherwise, there's no real purpose for her and she's toast. Heh.

The Starbuck/Leoben thing reminded me a bit of Gunn, down in the basement, getting his heart ripped out every day... but I digress...I think Starbuck is definitely a soldier (with all the good and bad connotations) more than anything. She's trying to figure out a way to get out of there and has possibly found Leoben's weakness so she's going to play that angle. (I have to say I'd be peeved if they stole my ovary and then produced an offspring I'm expected to fawn over.) She's had a lot of trouble even accepting the "skinjob" type Cylon so I'm wary about what's going on here.

I'm right there with you about Saul Tigh. Interesting first name of his...no? And I only caught on repeat viewing that his eye is gone. I thought it was just injured.

I'd write a bunch more but I don't want to bore.

Gotta say that the Dean Stockwell/preacher Cylon is for me, turning the whole concept of Cylons on it's head.
He's a preacher and thinks it's a Cylon weakness...a flaw, even to believe in a God. I see his point but it's even more interesting coming from his character's mouth.
None of the Cylons really seem to question him on this.

I've got to say I'm really not interested in Callie's character at all. She just a little to wimpy to me even if she has tried to kill Boomer. I really don't have much emotional investment in Chief or Callie.

I'm more interested in the psycho-social aspects of this series. SO WELL WRITTEN. The writers/producers know most people live in shades of grey even if they think in black and white a lot of the time.

And Baltar...you sure captured his essence, Chani.
A new version of narcissism...how true. I think he's going to turn around and look at what he's become and make some big changes. I can hardly wait.

I wonder if that Saul will ever have an epiphany on some new road to Damascus!

I forgot to say it, but Ellen Tigh looks like a Shakespearian character more than ever, very lady Macbeth rather than Helen of Troy!

Preacher Cavil is evil, and I must confess that Dean Stockwell will get on my nerves very soon if he keeps miming quotation marks!

I agree, Baltar is gonna surprise everyone soon...

Oh I love that show! It's almost as good as BTVS was.

Do you remember when he rejected the Six in his head in favour to Gina during season 2?

I think it was a big metaphor. Baltar did feel compassion for Gina, he took care of her, helped her, he was less self-centred than usual, so he rejected his Six that represented that part of himself caring only for his own ass!

He was definitely less self-centered in that situation. Surprisingly so.
Metaphor it must be.
