What pisses me off is the show being turned into a soap opera with lessens to be learned like drugs are bad and no means no. What happened to interesting characterisation like Willow's power struggles and Spike's road to redemption? I don't watch Buffy to have morals shoved down my throat.
The writers clearly knew Spike was a popular character and I read an interview with James Marsters jokingly saying the reason for that was women will forgive you being a monster if it's all for her. He made it clear the character loved Buffy and this was understood to be part of his appeal, the fact that he was devoted to Buffy. Therefore Marti in interviews makes patrionising comments about how viewers aren't getting the message intended. So they have Spike sell eggs just to remind us he is evil. And then they have him attempt to rape a women he claims to love which is out of character IMHO.
Plus I have seen the screencaps and the scene is very graphic and disturbing which will undoubtly distress women who in real life may have been victims of rape. On many message boards women fans of Spike are being accused of being perverts for defending Spuffy and saying it still has a chance. They should not have been put in such a position. I actually feel ashamed for caring about the characer Spike at this point. I don't appreciate the writers putting me in that position.
And portraying Buffy as the helpless victim leaves a bad taste in my mouth. What happened to the superhero who could kick mens asses? The whole point of violent foreplay in Smashed etc was that Buffy wasn't your typical victim. The writer actually accused viewers of sexism when it was suggested Spike was physically abusing Buffy in Smashed as you shouldn't hit women as they are the gentler sex. I had no problem with Buffy enjoying kinky sex and was all for it (hell I was jealous). But now Buffy is going to be punished for her sexual morals by having Spike try to rape her assuming it's what she wants as they have had kinky sex? What a repressive message.
At first I was mad at Spike and taking the attitude that I don't care if Buffy does stake him. Now I'm just angry at the writers and the unsubtly we are being insulted with.
And what is the point of putting Tara in the credits just before she is killed off? Talk about rubbing salt in the wounds. She should have been there the entire season!
And as for the planned graphic death of Tara which will see a bullet explode out of her chest splattering Willow with blood. Now that's entertainment!
