Dear Coworker:
"Timothy, my son, I give you this instruction in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by following them you may fight the good fight, holding on to faith and a good conscience. Some have rejected these and so have shipwrecked their faith." (1Ti 1:18,19)
Dear Samuel Lee, if you compare yourself to Timothy, do you have a good conscience?
Already, in the twinkling of an eye, the year 2000 has gone by and the new year, 2001, has dawned. I pray that the love of God who sent his one and only Son to be a ransom sacrifice, the grace of Jesus who accomplished God's salvation work by bearing all of our suffering and sins in his own body on the cross, and the work of the Holy Spirit who binds us into one body and gives us the courage to have faith in Jesus may be with you, my dear coworkers, in this new year.
May the love of God be with you, too.
When I
look back on this past year I realize that God's grace to me is boundless, and I am grateful to God for the opportunity which he has given me to grow spiritually.
It's great to hear you have grown spiritually!
Because I do not have a shepherd, ...
Poor man! Don't you know everybody in UBF has a shepherd? Many of us are desperately seeking for sheep. You will surely find a good shepherd in UBF.
... I accepted the apostle Paul as my shepherd ...
Good idea! He will surely not rebuke you too much or give you inhumane trainings. Just wanted to remind you, that there is an even better shepherd, Jesus. Ever heard of him?
... and I made his epistles my text book, and this is how I have grown until now.
Great! I will tell my shepherd to quit bible study. From now on I will only accept the apostle Paul as my shepherd, then I will grow as large as you did. I'm sure he will be
amazed!
His word is like a precious jewel to me; it teaches me and fills me with God's grace. And sometimes his word disciplines me like a flail.
Does this flail hurt as much as a baseball bat?
In the past 1500 years, Korea has suffered from factionalism, internal divisions and power struggles. As a result, so many people died of hunger and innumerable people were killed by the sword. Last year, when I saw such a power struggle going on in UBF, ...
Power struggle going on in UBF? Tell me more. The director of my chapter never told me. Anyway, what power can a person have in UBF?
... I realized that we were only following all over again the bad example of our ancestors.
Yes, of course, confucianism and so on. You are certainly free from such ideas, I assume.
I prayed daily to find God's will and new direction.
Need for a new direction for UBF.
Sounds good. I heard some refo... er... rebels say that, too.
Every night just before sleeping at midnight I sang the Lord's Prayer two times and put everything into the hands of God. This is how I spent each night.
Yes, better not care and put everything into the hands of God. Especially if it's a mess you have fabricated yourself.
As I read Paul's Epistles the words of 1Timothy 1:18 and 19 came to my heart and gave me comfort and showed me God's direction. As we seek to live lives of faith we find that we are engaged in a battle with the devil. But Paul told Timothy to "Fight the good fight."
"... holding on to faith and a good conscience."
I will quote Mathew Henry on this passage:
And let us be upright in our conduct in all things. ... May all who are tempted to put away a good conscience, and to abuse the gospel, remember that this is the way to make shipwreck of faith also.
color="olive">So even though I was struck and wounded by all of Satan's arrows, I only fought the good fight.
Of course, you always did.
I did not to use human means to fight back.
Never! And what about inhumane means?
Every time I heard slanderous lies,...
That must have been very often... But of course, it's all slander. Everything just invented for fun. Or by satan.
I thought, "I must answer this false slander."
Oh, yes? Other people thought that, too.
But I realized that no matter how truthful and right my answer to these slanderous false statements might be, if I answered anything I would only become a crazy dog fighting other crazy dogs.
I understand, if you answer truthfully, you will become a crazy dog. Your logic is ingenious. Anyway, I did not know that there are so many crazy dogs in UBF already. Fortunately, you did not
become a crazy dog, too.
So I only prayed. My most difficult battle was the one I fought with myself to fight only spiritually.
Yes, we now. You never made politics. You always fought only spiritually.
Because of your prayers I am still clinging to life and I am so grateful to you.
Nothing to thank for. Our director always asked us to pray for you and we simply obeyed, as we are used to.
I will continue to fight the good fight of faith.
And don't forget to hold on to faith and a good conscience, too. Just in case you did not remember.
I think that to fight the good fight of faith, not to bite and scratch like fighting dogs is the right attitude of God's servant.
You are so right. Those crazy dogs out there only want to bite and scratch.
No matter what happens to me in the future, ...
Do you fear to be torn
in pieces by those crazy dogs?
I have run the race of mission for 40 years, and I am grateful to God. That is all.
Of course. Who cares about the problems other people have? By the way, David and Salomon reigned for 40 years. Good time to abdictate.
I am thankful to God for using an unworthy servant like me in raising Korea from a sorrowful and fatalistic country like a flower under the wall to a country of bold heros of faith who have gone out to conquer the world with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Why didn't you receive the nobel price for peace instead of the president of Korea? You achieved so much more for you country! Once it was only like a flower under the wall, but when you came, it became a country of bold heros (and a few crazy dogs we don't count here).
This is God's great mercy on Korea. But I am so sorry that the Korean UBF has not been able to bear this great blessing of God.
You are so right. In some document of 1976 they already said (quote) "We can not bear it any longer." Fortunately, US, Japan and Germany have been able to bear this great blessing you are much longer.
When I see the political infighting in Korea and hear how non-Koreans in the various mission fields, and especially growing sheep who respected Koreans read the slanderous accusations on the internet become so disappointed in and discouraged by the Korean UBF, my heart is very heavy and sore.
How miraculous the non-koreans could understand the slanderous accusations by the Korean UBF, which are written in korean language!
However, I am convinced that God has a good purpose for his people who love him and he has a purpose for us, so we must follow the will of God and fight the good fight of faith.
Just in case you forgot ... holding on to faith and a good conscience.
Paul says that one who fights the
good fight must have a good conscience.
Finally, you got it.
One who has a good conscience does not slander and gossip about others but bears with the weaknesses of others and seeks to be a good shepherd.
Someone like you, I assume...
I am also a human being who is both good and evil.
No! I always thought you were something different.
The hardest thing for me is to maintain a good conscience.
That's why I repeated this point.
When UBF began, we sought to use 50% of our material gifts for world mission, 25% for relief work and 25% to take care of the flock of God.
How concrete!
This was our UBF direction and this was our conscience. But there were many times when it was very difficult to keep this principle.
Would be interesting to hear more about that...
But even
though it was difficult, I kept this principle no matter what.
No doubt you always used 50% of our material gifts for world mission, 25% for relief work and 25% to take care of the flock of God! It was hard, but you did it. No matter what.
There have been many international conferences and Chicago has been responsible for financing them all.
I assume Chicago also payed all of the oversea tickets and the conference fee for everybody.
At the last MSU international conference, missionaries suffering on the front line came from all over the world. We wanted to make their visit joyful and meaningful, so we chartered a plane which carried 175 people.
It surely was a great joy to sit in a plane with 175 people. And so meaningful!
We bore the financial responsibility for this in Chicago. We also paid for the expensive hotel accommodations.
I'm sure you worked hard day and night to
pay back those expenses.
Those whose consciences have been burned with fire have been planting doubt in the hearts of missionaries and students about how the offering money sent by missionaries as their tithe has been used.
They even slandered, that not only missionaries, but also native shepherds and sheep offered money over all the years, and the tenth of all chapters and sometimes more went to Chicago.
But this precious money has never been touched. It is all saved.
In this ingenious way you also achieved to spent exactly 50% of our material gifts for world mission, 25% for relief work and 25% to take care of the flock of God, because nothing was spent and 50% of nothing = 25% of nothing = nothing! Good to hear it's all saved. Let's hope moth and rust won't consume it.
I know very well how much the missionaries on the front line suffer from poverty. I know the deep meaning of the offerings that
they have made. Only God can use this money. My conscience does not allow me to touch it.
That will be a big event, when God will be stepping into the bank to use the money, finally!
When the time comes, and the government allows it, this money can be used to purchase a center in Russia.
This of course has to be done by God himself or some crazy dog who's conscience had been burned with fire, because your conscience does not allow you to touch the money.
It could also be used to build buildings in Africa that would alleviate our missionaries' suffering from sickness and heat and mosquitos.
What a great idea! I'm sure the missionaries in Africa never had such a great idea.
Those who accuse me of spending this money like water, using it any way I please, only show evidence that their consciences have been burned with fire.
That's undoubtedly an evidence of a conscience that
has been burned with fire!
Your prayers for me are so precious. I can't begin to tell you how much they mean to me. Please help me not to engage in a dog fight, but to fight the good fight of faith. Pray for me to do the work of God with a good conscience. Depending on your prayers, I conclude my new year's greetings to you.
I will continue to pray for you. Especially for the good conscience issue.
P.S. Sorry, couldn't reply more serious to this letter. Please forgive me.

Subject: What Sammy thinks of you!
According to the letter above this is what B. Dr. Samuel Lee thinks of us.
1. You are a dog. According to B. Dr. Samuel Lee he will not sink to the level of the reformers because they are fighting like crazed dogs.
2. You are possessed by Satan. B. Dr. Samuel Lee is very sad for those involved with the movement because they have become the tools of satan, and now he is fighting the spiritual battle against you.
3. You are full of lies and slander. B. Dr. Samuel Lee is very sorry for you because the many vicious lies you have told are beginning to make students question his organization. They are reading all kinds of this stuff and have become affected deeply.
What he thinks about himself:
He is God's gift to Korea. "....I am thankful to God for using an unworthy servant like me in raising Korea from a sorrowful and fatalistic country like a flower under the wall to a country of bold heros of faith who have gone out to conquer the world with the gospel of Jesus Christ. This
is Godâ~@~Ys great mercy on Korea."
God has told him to put the money in the bank. ..."Those whose consciences have been burned with fire have been planting doubt in the hearts of missionaries and students about how the offering money sent by missionaries as their tithe has been used. But this precious money has never been touched. It is all saved. I know very well how much the missionaries on the front line suffer from poverty. I know the deep meaning of the offerings that they have made. Only God can use this money." When God is good and ready he will tell Samuel Lee to buy a house or charter a jet, but until then God has told him to hoard it in the bank.

Yes, SL sent this letter to Korean missionaries and Korean coworkers in Korean only. Please see www.reformubf.org site for an indepth analysis of this letter. It can be found under "The reason for reforming ministry, Analysis of Samuel lee's Report" in Bulletin board. Samuel Lee's letter was neither correct nor sincere. It is a vulgar propaganda. An indepth analysis of the 1976 reform is in UBFhope in www.reformubf.org's Links section. it is written in korean. It is being translated, I believe. That analysis shows that SL is totally distorting the true picture of the 1976 reform movement.

Dear Dr. Samuel Lee
The Reformers accused you of nothing. They merely wanted you to give detailed answers to the questions. Who accused you of "spending money like water"? They merely asked for the detailed ledgers of how UBF money has been spent and managed. A detailed accounting and audit is routine for the smallest non-profit organization yet it has never been done in UBF.
Also, which Reformer has slandered you and how? They merely asked questions. There are many hurt and angry people who are not even Reformers who have questions. Don't blame their responses on Reformers. Would you be willing to come before an impartial council to discuss the questions freely?
Perhaps it is your own conscience that accuses you since you have called faithful men and women of God and honest men tools of Satan?
Are you viewing the Reformers in such a negative way because it is a reflection and judgment of yourself?
I am very much for Reform in UBF and though I have never slandered
anyone at all ever, you apply the term "crazy dog" to such people who question this ministry. This is not right. I am a servant of God. I am a child of Christ, whom Jesus bought with his precious blood on the cross. It is not fitting that you call such people "crazy dogs." Please be respectful to the children of God and Jesus' brothers and sisters.

Yes, Servant of God,I do consider you a brother in Christ. Even though I may not agree with the Reform, I do consider you a Servant of God. I do feel that many who have spoken on this website are slanderers. this is because they are not leaders of the reform, but followers who are struggling in their anger. Please shepherd these people. These are the ones who are making the Reform look evil in the eyes of UBF and Dr.Samuel Lee.

Subject: Re: SL's recent letter and bank statements
Is a slanderer one who deliberately tells a lie to destroy someone's reputation, i.e. give false witness? Then I don't think many here are slanderers. Angry at evil they've seen and personally experienced, yes. Slanderers, no. Let's not equate being outraged and even bitter with being slanderous. The person who claimed that the marriages in October were "fake marriages" I would consider slanderous and a little deranged. But "Please shepherd these people" is so condescending. Before there was this web site full of "slanderers" and before there was a WWW, there was the "evil 1976 rebellion" and the "evil 1989 rebellion" by "slanderers." Any attempt at reform has looked evil and will continue to look evil to the UBF leader and leadership, with or without web sites full of "evil slanderers." Nevertheless, I agree that we should tone down the name calling and be constructive here and elsewhere.

Subject: Re: SL's recent letter and bank statements
Disciple, please tell me specifically which items by whome are slanderous? Also, please explain how you know for a fact that it is slander. Just because you want to believe something is untrue is not a reason for it to be in fact untrue. In a normal church, there would be a way to address wrong doing even of leaders. Does UBF have such a way? No, definitely not.
Let's investigate alleged allegations of wrong doing and see if it is indeed slander. I think if you do that then it would silence people who believe there is a serious problem.
Also, concerning angry people who voice their opinions, I think they are among your own flock. So, you please make a way to help them deal with their anger. Why are so many people angry anyway? Doesn't that tell you something?
Also, don't you think that when someone calls servants of God crazy dogs and tools of the evil one, then isn't that a form of slander?
Please do not see only what you want to see.

Quote from "Dr." Samuel Lee's Christmas Letter (2000):
"... This became the 1976 rebellion. They planted doubt in the aid nurses in Germany and suggested that I only cared about the marriage problems of the nurses in America. ..."
Quote from the Open Letter to Samuel Lee (1976):
"... In the 1975 fall leader conference, you forced single male shepherds to make an oath, 'I am the husband of a female German missionary.' ..."
How does this fit together? If he "cared" in such a way about the "marriage problems" of the nurses in Germany, why then should they have planted doubt that he only cared about the marriage problems of the nurses in America? Something is wrong here. Who knows the background of these stories?Anyway, the 76 reform issues should not be mixed up with the "marriage problems" of some nurses.

Subject: "Rebels, dogs, barking dogs, crazy dogs, puppies and pigs, oh my!"
Chicago UBF people (especially Korean missionaries) are kind of funny. In public and in testimonies they denounce those "rebels." They call Korean senior shepherds who have given their lives and youth "rebels" and "barking dogs." But when Abraham T. Kim was here two years ago as a likely successor to SLee, they were singing a different tune. If you don't know, Dr. Abraham Kim was Ron Ward's and Greg Eden's shepherd when he was in America. When called to America again by SLee, he gave up a prestigious position in the Korean Military Academy and came to the USA. He stayed in Chicago for some time. Then one day he told SLee that Chicago UBF should be changed for the glory of God. Did this request for changes just come out of the blue? No. It was the Chicago Korean missionaries who were telling the likely successor that changes were needed. So, when Abe Kim very naively told SLee that changes were needed, he was no longer a likely successor, and he was kicked up North to Milwaukee to repent of his reformist
tendencies. So, when I hear Chicago UBF people calling the Reform the "work of Satan and barking dogs," I don't know if I believe them. I think they know changes are needed, but they've been too beaten down and cowed by SLee to stand up for themselves. Pray for us.
Also, by not listening to Abe Kim, SLee missed yet another chance to prevent what is happening now.

Subject: Re: Lee's sycophants
I can think of several reasons why Chicago missionaries (and some non-Koreans) might be acting this way:
1) They know they need to make a lot of noise against the reformers to be considered loyal to Samuel Lee. I'm not an expert on Communist systems, but there are some obvious similarities between the way SL runs the UBF and the way some Communist dictatorships are run (think about it the next time you see the leader's face staring at you from the front page of the party-line newsletter). As in Stalinist Russian, to keep quiet and fail to condemn one who is out of favor with the leader, is to put oneself under suspicion. Hence, the eagerness to prove their loyalty vocally by criticizing the "rebels."
2) Many of these people have been around a long time. Even though they probably did not know the content of the reform movements in 1976 and 1989, they know the result: Samuel Lee emerged victorious (because he is "God's servant," right?). They have no reason to doubt that SL, with all his
power, will emerge victorious again this time, and they do not want to be caught on the wrong side when he does.
3) Samuel Lee is giving people money to buy their loyalty. This disgusts me, but I have it on good authority that this is happening. In fairness to some of the missionaries, it is very difficult to refuse a "gift" from Samuel Lee. To refuse to accept money from him at this time could put a person under suspicion as a "rebel." I know of one family who received money from SL, only to turn around and put it in the offering plate on Sunday (to ease their conscience, perhaps?)
4) They might be waiting for Samuel Lee to die. This sounds horrible, but I know there are people who feel this way. I will write more on this point later.

Yes, I know that money is flowing very freely these days. We were offered a tidy some recently that seemed to coincide with our concerns about Reform. We tore up the check. I know others kept theirs.

I don't want to say much because I am fearful of being fingered and then getting slandered by leadership. I will say it was offered in a chapter other than Chicago. It was supposedly just "for good service" but it seems strange that it would occur all of a sudden after the same service for many years. There are a couple of other things that bothered me about it but I cannot say more. I will say it was between $300 and $900.

Subject: Bribes or Gifts?
There have been many reports that B.Dr. Samuel Lee has in the past, and is now passing out money to many UBF members. I just wanted to post my little input on what I know about Asian culture and "gift giving." I once had a room mate who was a lawyer in China who told me all about the "gift giving" that went on in the crimminal justice system there. He was really disgusted by it though because it made the legal process so corrupt.
I have another friend from Korea, a businessman who mentioned about all of the gift giving done in the business world there, as well as politics. It seems that in many Asian countries it is not seen as crimminal to accept a nice payment or gift for some service you might do. It is an outward show of loyalty and friendship, and to not accept it would be very, very rude.
But lets think about this Biblically. When the council at Jerusalem met in Acts did James go around passing out silver pieces in order to get more votes on the dietary laws? No, instead they met, had
a discussion, I'm sure much prayer, and came to a conclusion in unity. This should be our example for reform in UBF, not passing out gifts.
To Korean Shepherds who have been offered a gift: I warn you not to accept it unless you are too weak to suffer the conciquences. Don't even cash it and offer it back in the offering plate- that would be like Annanias and Saphira! And if you take the check, well don't forget the small little gift Judas Iscariot took from the Priests! Don't sell out your principles or the many suffering students for a few dollars! Please!
Thanks

Subject: Re: Bribes or Gifts?
Yes, handing out money as gifts in UBF seems to be a very common practice. It is not common in American churches unless someone is in need. Even then, it is not the decision of one person, but usually of a committee within the church. I wonder how much money has been given away as "gifts"?

dear bribary crime fighters,
Asian countries like Singapore has adopted anti-corruption law and has cleansed bribary practices. Now Korea is making anti-bribary laws. China is also considering seriously. gift-giving shloud be clean like christmas gifts. What Samuel lee is doing is not gift-giving but a bribary.
And guess what? Whose money is he using for a bribary? It is either God's money (your offering)
or his own money which he has stolen from God's treasury.
So please refuse his Mafia-style bribary with courage. Do not accept it at all. Please practice non-cooperation and non-violence when you are in UBF as Gahndi and his people did toward oppressors. Sadam hussein holds on to his power by giving bribary to people. where did he get 6 billion dollars? from Iraqi people.

Recently I came to read your posting. I should clarify things you commented. While I was in Chicago, I had opportunities to visit some of my coworkers' homes. None of the missionaries mentioned about the leadership as you commented. I saw in them sincere devotion and heart to serve American campus mission. I always thank God for them and all the preious coworkers in UBF who have shown such beautiful love and loyalty to the Lord. Plese do not make any comment concerning me out of your imagination.
