Subject: Mental/Spiritual Development for Magick

We all must admit, that our practices and beliefs as Wiccans, Odinists, Occultists or whatever we call ourselves are not mirror reflections of practices of the past. Like any other Religion, we have borrowed, been influenced and have absorbed elements of many different traditions, religions, and spiritual paths. All religions, whether mainstream or not, are eclectic to some degree and all have been changed, for better or worse, by humanities constant evolutions and changes physically, spiritually and socially.
One aspect of our humanity, the spiritual aspect, is a journey that many of us take. If we decide to journey down a path, shouldn't we and take a look around while moving towards our goal? The point of a walk in the woods is not to get to the end of the path, it is to see the birds, the trees, the plants and all the other small things that make the whole, just as they are. Just because we think it may not seem important or related to our journey, we may not pick up certain tools that will ultimately help us.
I have read that Magick is a projection of human will to affect change. I believe, through my own personal experiences that to a certain extent, we are projecting our will, but we are not doing this alone. My view is that Magick is the drawing in of certain forces and using the will to direct these forces to achieve an objective, much like a spark plug does in our cars. A spark plug takes in massive ammounts of raw energy and directs that power to ignite your gas to produce combustion to create power to move your vehicle, it is the same with Magick. If we are "spark plugs" then we must prepare ourselve spiritually and mentally to be able to accept and direct these energies in a continuous flow. The more efficient a "sparkplug" we are the more effective our direction and combustion will be.
I have found that the Asian philosophies of the "no mindedness" of Zen and "DO" (the way) are very helpful in these ends. I also practice primitive archery and have found the ideas in Kyudo to also be helpful. I will not pretend to be an expert on Zen or DO, but I can say I have benefited greatly by these systems. I would encourage anyone whether you practice Magick or not to at least give it a try, you will not be dissapointed. I have also played the Native American flute for several years and have just started playing the Shakuhachi flute, both of which are great sources of meditation and inspiration that I believe have helped my preparedness. I'm sure that any instrument can be used in this way, but I prefer those closest to nature.
