Subject: Review Doctor Who: Sword of Orion

As the second audio story of the eighth Doctor, this story was the first to bring into a key player in the Doctor Who mythology, the Cybermen.

"When the Doctor sets out to educate Charley on the darker side of her race's future, he does not anticipate being embroiled in the protracted Orion War. The front line may be light years away, but the human race's struggle for victory has led to desperate measures.

Trapped aboard a mysterious star destroyer in the Garazone System, the Doctor and Charley find themselves cast as scapegoats. But the real danger has yet to awaken...

The Cybermen have received the signal for reactivation
"

So goes the story. The Cybermen in this story are Cybermen which have been put on a Cyber-production ship, that is asleep, while the Cybermen on Telos are also asleep. The ship itself got "caught" and trapped -- near a sector of space where humans and androids had been fighting each other.

Early on in the story, the story shows itself to be a solid adventure story, with the Doctor showing the far future to Charley, in a huge constructed world -- but then the TARDIS gets taken aboard a ship, and they have to rus to the ship - and then become unwelcome visitors aboard the ship. When that ship runs into the Cybermen, and one of the crew is killed, the Doctor is found over the body and he is charged for the murder. Typical Doctor who fair -- but enjoyable.

The story does not have many unique revelations, but it is an enjoyable segment to listen to. So far I've enjoyed all the 8th Doctor adventures I've listened to -- they really show the quality of stories that Doctor Who can be, and continue on with the mythos, without being caught up in the past as some of the 6th and 7th Doctor stories had been. Needless to say, you still get the past in the stories - a Dalek story, a Cyberman story, a Brigadier story, a Gallifrey story, a Nimon story -- and yet, beyond them, there are elements of fresh creativity which is impressive, and although not always the case, in general some of the best scripts Doctor Who has seen for years. Surely this is the company and group of people who should be writing for Doctor Who, if it is ever televised again -- they understand it, and yet willing to instill a newness which is needed to keep it interesting.

The Sword of Orion I give a solid B -- it is an enjoyable story, not the best of the 8th Doctor's era, but certainly not bad!
