Subject: Review Doctor Who: Loups Garoux

Germany, 1589: the townspeople of Cologne pronounce a sentence of death on a mass-murderer who has stalked the countryside in the guise of a ferocious wolf.

Russia, 18112: retreating from Napoleon's invading forces, a merchant's daughter is rescued from bandits by a handsome Parisan with a ravenous appetite.

Brazil, 2080: the Doctor and Turlough arrive for the Rio de Janeiro carnival.

Is wealthy heiress Ileana de Santos all that she seems? What sinister ailment afflicts her invalid son, tended by the mysterious Dr Hayashi? And who exactly is Rosa, engaged on a secret quest to fulfil the destiny of her extinct tribe?

Time is running out for Rosa, Ileana and the Doctor, as the fearsome shadow of an ancient werewolf moves ever closer...

Written by Marc Platt, Loups Garoux is another excellent Doctor Who story. Marc researched the topic well - he chose a famous werewolf incident, and used it as the basis for this story -- who was Peter Stubbe?

What is amazing about this story is the relationship between the Doctor (Peter Davison's Doctor in a shining moment) with the leader of the werewolves (Ileana de Santos). With hints of the romance in the Aztecs, but taken many steps further. In the Aztecs, there was no rivalry, in Loups Garoux -- many of the other werewolves -- from Peter (who is outside of the clan, and more powerful) to those within her clan -- all want her attention, to become her mate. When the Doctor becomes her guardian, to protect the werewolves from genocide -- this sort of seals his relationship with her-- somewhat unwittingly, and yet at the nend of the story one can tell -- there was something more to it even for the Doctor.

Other than the charming romance aspect of the story, the main story -- of a group of werewolves trying to survive in the world, the kind of power they have to survive, and yet the fright they have when facing their "creator" - creates for a riviting story. Marc does a very good job in showing the different kinds of power/emotions of the werewolves, and seeing how they play with Turlough and try to get Turlough to manifest his darker side -- again, very classic.

There are a couple weaknesses in the story, and the end just reminds me too much of Frontios' ending... but besides the small complaints, I find it -- one of the top 10% of Doctor Who stories. 9/10 (A-).
